Selenes POV

Tuesday

I’m woken up by the sound of the blender. “Zarina!” I yell and put the pillow over my head to muffle it out but it doesn’t help. I toss the cover off and storm out my room and into the kitcken. “Zarina!” I yell again.

She turns to me and takes out her smoothie to pour it into her smoothie cup. “Good morning fellow doctor.” She said with a smile and proudly.

I blush at the praise but shake it off remembering why I came in here. “Why are you blending a smoothie at 5 in the morning when neither of us have to be up until 6?” I say with my arms crossed as she sips her smoothie.

“Well, I got called in but I can’t function without my smoothie. So I apologize for waking you up, I did make you one. It’s in the fridge.” She says apologetically and in hopes I’ll forgive her.

I roll my eyes and smile. “Thank you.” I run my hand through my hair from exhaustion. “Oh. Do you know where I have all my old school stuff I need to see something?” I ask looking as I’m asking.

She frowns to think and then snaps. “Ah. It’s under the tv stand.” I got to the stand and see the box. I pull out the yearbook and search for the woman on my mind. “Ooh looking for an old crush.” She says teasingly.

I shake my head. “No a student.”

“Uh why?” She asks curiously.

“She started working at the school as the new gym coach and she looks completely different. The only thing the same is honestly her eyes.” I say blushing just thinking about the woman.

Zarina eyes me weirdly and smirks. “Ok let me see this girl that’s got you blushing like that. I have to see what the fuss is about.” She says sitting beside me on the coach as I flip through the book.

“There she is.” I say pointing to a 18 year old Jordyn. She’s wearing a red flannel with a white shirt under, thick glasses, braces showing in her smile, and her black hair is longer. For the basketball mvp, she looked like such a nerd off the court.

“That’s the girl you’re obsessed with?” Zarina asks and I nod my head. “I mean hey we all have our own preferences.” She says lifting her hands in surrender.

I chuckle. “She looks so much different then this. She’s cute here honestly but god Zarina, she’s ethereal.” I say gushing over her like a teenage girl.

“Well, if I ever have time to come by your job I’ll see for my self.” She says and gets up to leave. She kisses my cheek and leaves saying she’ll be home late.

I continue looking at Jordyns senior picture and catch myself wondering what made her change. She looks so more mature now. No shit, she’s 23. She’s not a child anymore. I close the book and get up to get an early start since I’m already up. I put on black slacks and a blue button up with my glasses and put my hair up in a messy bun on top of my head. By the time I got done getting ready it 6:30 and I headed out to go get my coffee and croissant.

I make it to the coffee shop and again it’s a line but it’s moving and that only means, “Two mochas with ice and cream!” I hear Jordyn’s voice yelling out the order to the older tan guy who I assume is Roscoe. I watch as she smiles at each customer when they speak to her and how she laughs even when they aren’t even funny but I can tell it’s not her real laugh because her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Next in line please.” She calls and I’m next being taken out of my mind of admiring her. Three times.

“Good morning. You mine as well work here don’t you think?” I say jokingly.

She looks around and leans down to a whisper. “Between you and I, he couldn’t afford me.” She leans back and winks and I laugh. “But what can I get for you today?” She asks.

“Black coffee but a croissant today please.” I order and hand her my card.

“Your order will be down there.” She says and I go to get my order. “See you at work.” She says after I grab it and head out.

“See you Jordyn.” I say smiling and heading out.

I make it to the school by 7:30. I go to my office and start organizing the bookshelf. Tossing out ones the last counselor left and putting them in a box so I can donate them to the library. I head out to my car to get my books, when I see Jordyn pulling in and I hear Outta Time by Bryson Tiller playing. Well she definitely have taste in music. She gets out and grabs her duffel bag and slings it on her shoulder. When she closes her trunk she finally notices me and sends a smile my way and walks to me. “Well hello. I feel like we see each other a lot more than we should.” She says with her brows together.

I chuckle. “I agree. But I’m not complaining.” I say and I realize what I said and my eyes go wide.

She smirks. “Is that so? Well I wasn’t necessarily complaining either.” She says walking closer to me by a step. “What are you doing?” She nods toward my trunk that has boxes of my books.

“I’m filling the bookshelf in my office with books I read and helpful ones for my sessions.” I say and go to grab one realizing they’re actually heavy and I’ll have to take two trips.

“Here let me help.” She says grabbing the other box.

“You don’t have to do that Jordyn. I don’t mind taking two trips.” I say honestly.

She smiles and wiggles her eyebrows. “Well now you don’t have to.” She says and we walk back towards the building and to my office talking about who the misguided kids are and the academically gifted ones are.

“I actually have a session with Mason today. So hopefully he doesn’t give me too much trouble.” I say as we set my boxes down on my desk. Mason is known for fighting off impulse so hopefully we can work on that.

She takes a deep breath and lets her eyes scan the office I take my time scanning her. She is really a beautiful woman. She matured so much. “Did you get taller?” I find myself asking and her eyes find mine.

She chuckles at the random question placing her hands in her adidas’s white and black track suit. “Uh yeah I did actually. I hit a random growth spurt in college. So I went from 5’8 to 6’0. It was actually quite scary. I just kept growing.” She said.

I continuing eyeing her and she shied away telling me she has to get ready for her freshman class. “What is wrong with me?” I ask myself as I sit in my desk chair thinking about what just happened. Why did I keep asking her questions and staring at her? I probably made her uncomfortable and now she’s gonna steer clear of me. Great.

I get up and start organizing my book’s alphabetically by author. I connect my phone to my Bluetooth speaker, that usually plays white noise to give it a calm setting, and puts on Good Luck, Babe by Chappel Roan.

Knock knock. I hear the muffle knock and I turn to see Mrs. Cantraz walking in. I pause my music and send her a smile. “Hi Mrs Cantraz. What can I do for you? Is my expertise required?” I ask.

She shakes her head and smiles. “Oh no sweetie. Trust me, my husband and I took enough counseling for the both of us to last a lifetime. No, I just came to see how you’re adjusting to the new environment.” She says genuinely.

I smile and shrug. “Quite honestly it’s like when I was an English teacher. The students always came to me when they had problems. They trusted me when I was just there teacher giving advice and an ear. I just hope they continue to trust me when now I have the ability the dig deeper.” I say honestly.

She nods and smiles. “Oh I’m so happy for you. I just know you’re going to do great.” I nod and say thank you. “Well I just wanted to check on you. If you need anything you can call me or Jordyn.” She says and I eye her confused.

“Jordyn ? Why Jordyn?” I ask.

“Oh. She’s part of the VOA committee.” She says and continues. “Voice of Action. We get together every Friday to discuss matters that need to be addressed and fixed to better the school environment. It’s been really helpful. We haven’t gotten any reports of bullying and the revolving door for quitting has ceased. It’s a really great way to get involved.” She explains.

I nod. “Wow this school is really doing great things. I’m so happy to be coming back to positive change.”

“Baby!” I hear a high screeching voice coming from outside my office since the door is open.

“God! What was that?” I complain cringing and walking out with Mrs. Cantraz behind me.

Her arms cross over her chest and she scoffs when we see the source of the noise. It was a girl about my height of 5’6 blonde, big blue eyes, freckles, and wearing a very short pink shirt and white crop top. “God where are her clothes?” I complain that she’s in the school with that inappropriate clothing on. I’m not one to shake how someone dresses but basically walking in naked while at school is a no go.

“She isn’t a student.” She says and I eye her curiosily. “That’s Morgan Kaiser.” I see Jordyn walking out of the gym to talk to the girl known as Morgan and it looks like she’s scolding her the way Morgan’s pouting and playing with her fingers. But she wraps her arms around Jordyn’s neck and she wraps hers around her waist and they kiss. Oh. “And she’s the girlfriend of Jordyn. I don’t understand why but I’m not one to judge someone’s love.” She says and I kinda tune her out watching them kiss and smile with each other.

My chest goes tight at the sight. Fuck I’m jealous. I shake that feeling off and stop watching the two and turn back to Mrs. Cantraz. “Well they’re cute. I have to get ready for my first session. But thank you for stopping by.” I say trying to sound unbothered.

“One, there’s no need to lie. They’re a terrible couple but everyone has their reasons I guess. And two of course. I’ll continue to check. Have a good day.” She says and leaves.

I go to close the door but I freeze when I see that the girl is gone but Jordyn is looking at me with a smirk and waving. I wave back and she goes back into the gym. I close the door and rest my back onto it to breathe. Of course she has a girlfriend. I cuss myself for even caring and go back to organizing.

12:00 pm

Lunch hits and I take myself to the teachers lounge so I can get familiar with the other staff. Everyone is nice honestly. It’s a lot of new people so the old drama from the original people aren’t here and it’s refreshing honestly. Im talking with Mrs. Cantraz and two other teachers who teach English and Science for the juniors. My senses go off when I catch a smell of a familiar scent of lavender. I turn my head towards the door and see Jordyn walking in and making her way to the table we’re at.

“Hey there stalker.” She says leaning to my ear so only I heard her.

My eyes go wide and I snap my head to her. “What are you talking about?” I ask her.

She smirks. “I saw you when Morgan came to see me.” She says.

My mouth goes in the shape of an ‘o’. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to stare. I just didn’t know you had a girlfriend so it just caught me by surprise.” I say truthfully.

She shrugs and nods. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. It’s still pretty new. I’m getting used to it myself.” She jokes and I chuckle with her. “But I’m sorry if she disturbed you. I told her she can’t show up here every day disturbing even if school isn’t in yet.” She said while taking her lunch of a salad and applesauce and a Coke Zero out.

I snicker at her meal choice but clear my throat to respond to her. “No it’s fine. She’s your girlfriend. She just wants to be around you. I’d be just like her.” My eyes go wide at my realization. Why do I say the stupidest shit around her?

She laughs. “Yeah well I wouldn’t mind it.” She says in a flirtatious way. Is she flirting with me? Gotta be right? But why would she if she has a girlfriend?

“Jordyn?” I go to ask her and she looks me in my eyes and I freeze knowing I have her full attention. Remembering back in class when she would always keep eye contact with me whenever I addressed her. She was always good at that. She just oozes confidence.

“Yes, Selene?” She asks when I don’t continue.

“Um, are you flirting with me?” I ask honestly wanting to know. I’m not usually this bold but I have to know if I’m reading this wrong.

She smirks and leans closer to my face and I swallow. I think she noticed because her eyes go from my throat back to my eyes. “Do you want me flirting with you, Selene?” She ask avoiding my original question.

“I’m a licensed psychiatrist, Jordyn. Using reverse psychology doesn’t really work on me.” I say with a smirk.

She chuckles and god I love her laugh. “Well then I guess you don’t want your answer.” She shrugs and the bell rings signaling lunch is done. “It was nice having lunch with you. See you after school.” She says and leaves the room.

School has ended for the day and I lock up my office to head down to the gym where I see the weight room light on. She really does stay after everyday. I walk into the room and see her squatting with what looks like 200 lbs on her shoulders. She does it with such ease and grace. I envy that a-. “Selene.” She calls waving her hand in front of my face. Fourth time. “Where’d you go?” She ask with her duffel bag on her shoulder and her water bottle. She is wearing a sleeves white muscle shirt and workout shorts and once again her usually curly hair that mops her head is straight and stuck to her face from sweat.

“Sorry. Just tired. Ready to go?” I say trying to play off that I wasn’t just checking her out.

She smirks and nods and we walk out together like yesterday. “You know Selene,” we turn to each other when we reach our cars, “you don’t have to lie about checking me out. I know I look different then when I was in school. I’ve worked really hard where I actually like looking myself in the mirror. I’m proud of my appearance now.” She says honestly and I never knew she was insecure about how she looked before. There was nothing wrong with what she looked like. She just looks more confident and self assured now.

I nod. “I’m sorry. You are just very attractive honestly. It just catches me off guard sometimes.” I say honestly.

She nods. “Well thank you. You are still very much the gorgeous woman I met my junior year.” She says and her words catches me by surprise. “Oh don’t be surprised. You must hear it all the time from that guy you were dating back then.” She says talking about Michael my ex who cheated on me.

“I forgot I told you guys about him. Um, we’re actually not together anymore.” I say running my hand through my hair.

Her eyes go wide. “Really? You always seemed happy with him. I’m sorry to hear that. Well, his lost.” She says and I chuckle.

“What makes you think he’s the one that messed up?” I smirk.

She shakes her head and then goes to put her bag in the trunk and walks to my door to open it for me. She leans on the door as I get settled in. “Because you’re perfect Ms. Kaci. Anyone can see that.” She says with a neutral face telling me she’s serious. “Have a good night Selene. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She says and closes my door to head to hers.

I drive off and once again she leave after I pull out the parking lot. She has a girlfriend. I get home after picking up pizza since neither me or Zarina have the skill or time to cook. I sit at the couch with a plate of pizza when Zarina walks in in her scrubs and doctors coat looking dead. “Jesus you look like shit.” I say jokingly.

“Ha ha ha.” She rolls her eyes and sits next to me. “I’m gonna quit.” She says.

I roll my eye this time. “You say that every day and you have yet to and you know why.” She turns to me lazily. “Because you love your job. You help people Rina. That’s all you ever wanted to do and you do it. It’s why you’re the best and it’s why you’re in the position you’re in now.” I say.

She smiles. “Ugh I hate when you get all ‘proud and helpful’.” She says and we laugh.

“Here, eat.” I say handing her a plate of pizza sure that she probably hasn’t time to eat all day and it’s why she prepares smoothies. They’re like her meal replacement until she gets home.

“You’re the best.” She swallows. “So how’s it going with your ex student.” She asks.

I cringe at the reminder she was my student. “Ugh don’t say that she hasn’t been my student for 5 years. Her names Jordyn and she has a girlfriend.” I say way more disappointed then I realized.

“So?” She shrugs.

“What do you mean so? There’s definitely nothing going to happen between her and I now.” I say.

“I didn’t know you wanted anything to happen between you two.” She says with a smirk and I realize she’s right. I just told her she looked different I never said I liked her. “Look there’s nothing wrong with having crushes on taken people. They’re hot, people are going to like them.” She explains and shrugs while eating.

I nod. “You’re right. It’s just she flirts with me. Atleast I think she does.” I say.

“Well if you think she’s flirting, she’s probably not serious about her relationship.”

“She said it’s new.”

“What’s new? Like within the hour new or like a few weeks new?” She asks eyeing my skeptically.

“Well an old teacher I knew from when I was teaching is who told me they were dating so I assume atleast for a couple of weeks for her to know who she is.” I say.

“Hmm. Well does she seem like she’s the player type?” She asks.

I shrug. “I don’t think so honestly. Jordyn’s sweet and kind. I don’t think she’d do anything shady. I just don’t understand why she’d be flirting when she has a girlfriend.”

“Well, if she has a girlfriend no matter how new or old it is, we aren’t home wreckers. So until they break up or you have an exact answer on what’s going on, leave it alone and continue to just be friends with her.”

I nod. “Right. We’re not homewreckers. I’ve been cheated on I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.”

“Good. Now can you please give me one of your infamous foot massage. I’ve been standing all day.” She whines and I chuckle.

“Give em to me.” I say and she puts her feet in my lap as we watch Love Island.
