Jordyn’s POV
3:30 PM Monday
I’m in the weight room and I just finished my set. I start packing up knowing Selene will be down so we can walk out. The moment in her office was amazing. I really didn’t mind us moving slow but her intiating just set me off and I couldn’t say no. Why would I? I hope she doesn’t regret it.
I’ve locked up the weight room and now I’m waiting on Selene. It’s 3:35 now and she’s still not here. I head up to her office and see the light is off. I go to open the door but it’s locked. I pull out my phone and text her.
Me: hey where are you?
I wait for her to text back but after 10 minutes of waiting she doesn’t and I walk out the school to see her car isn’t even there. What the hell? She left. I get in my car and instead of driving to my apartment I head to hers.
I get outside of her apartment building amd see her car outside and try texting her again.
Me: hey.
Me: I’m outside. Can I come up?
I tap my fingers against my steering wheel anxiously staring at our messages and it doesn’t even say she read it yet. Did she regret it? I start the car back up and drive off, feeling like shit. I make it back to my apartment and I hesitate going up in hopes she’ll text me back but it’s 5:30 now and if she wanted to she would’ve. Maybe something came up. Maybe a family emergency. Yeah yeah. She had to leave and not tell me because it was important and happened quickly. She’ll talk to me tomorrow. I take breath and head inside with a clearer mind that everything is ok.
I walk in and go to the kitchen to start on dinner. “There’s my favorite person.” Jason says as I’m washing my hands.
I eye him suspiciously. “Oh your favorite person huh? What do you want?” I ask.
He rolls his eyes and snacks his teeth. “Oh come on. Why do I always have to want something for you to be my favorite person?” He says.
I narrow my eyes at him. “Because Morgan would usually be your favorite person just because she brings you the sour patch kids you like or pizza. And I’m your favorite person only when you need something from me, so what’s up?”
He sighs and hops on the counter beside me as a I cut the vegetables. “Friday night is girls night and you know you’re my wingwoman. I need you there.”
I shake my head. “I can’t man. Selene and I are moving on with our relationship and I don’t want to act like I’m interested in other women just so you can get laid.” He opens his legs so I can get a fork out of the drawer.
“Please Jordyn. It’s pretend you and I both know you would never trade up on Selene. It’s for me. Your bestest best friend. Pleeeeaaase.” He begs with his hands together.
I roll my eyes. “Ugh fine. But if the first time doesn’t work, you’re a lost cause.” I say pointing the fork at him.
“Ppsh it only takes one time when you’re by my side. So how today go? Were you able to handle the tension?” He asks wiggling his brows.
I nod. “Of course man. We want to take things slow. There’s no rush.” I say lying. Jason is one of those guys who like to brag about the women he sleeps with rather I don’t, especially not a woman like Selene. And now that she’s kinda ghosted me I don’t think mentioning it would even be ok. “We did kiss again though. So, like I said taking it slow.” I say.
He nods and pats my back and then walks back to his room. I check my phone and it says she read my messages 5 minutes ago but didn’t reply. What the fuck?
Tuesday
Buzz buzz! My phone vibrating jolts me up. I see the time it says 5:30, meaning one thing. “What’s up Roscoe?” I say half asleep in my pillow.
“Per favore Jordyn. Ho bisogno di te.” He says and I groan.
“Ci sarò.” I say and I hang up. I stretch furiously and get out of bed to get dressed. He better be glad I love him like a brother. I finish showering and not bothering doing anything to my hair. It’ll style itself. I put on the schools grey track suit with the bulldog on my chest and left pants pocket and my Jordan 12s. I finish up and grab my phone and check it to see if Selene ever texted back.
Seleneâ¤ï¸: I’ll see you tomorrow.
Is all she said. Well hopefully I will see her at the cafe and we can talk a little bit before work. I grab my keys and head out. I make it to the shop by 6:00 on the dot once the shop opens. “Seriously Roscoe, devi licenziarlo.” I say tying the apron on me.
“I know, I know. Grazie per essere venuto.” He says tapping my back. I’ve known Roscoe since I was 13 and my dad will bring me here because they have the best coffee in town, according to my dad. Roscoe was my age when he came to the United States from Italy and started the shop. My dad endorsed it immediately finding out to give it a pick up and business started booming quickly. When I turned 16 I started working here part time until I was 18 and left to get my degree. So I know the ends and outs of how the place works. So he asks for my help when his employees run late or just don’t show up. And I don’t mind but I do love my sleep.
Customers start pouring in the moment the sign is flipped to open. I put my charming smile on and get to work. “Hi welcome to Roscoe’s what can I get you started with today?” I ask the young woman who has her phone out that looks like she has all the orders on. She must be an assistant. She’s fair skinned, short brunette hair in a curled bob, a black pants suit with a white button up underneath and red lipstick and freckles.
“Hi.” She breathes and tells me her order and I try my best to keep up with the 5 long orders. “And can those be in to go cups?” She says and I nod giving her a sympathetic smile.
“You have a car to carry all this with?” I ask and she shakes her head no.
“No I actually got my car towed last night. So I’ll be riding the bus with two trays of coffee.” She says sounding exhausted already.
I grab her hand before she leaves. “Hey Im sure the person who is supposed to be here will be here soon, I can take you to your job. It’s no problem.” I offer.
Her eyes go wide. “Wait seriously? It’s just a 15 minute drive from here.” I nod. “Oh my god thank you. I might keep my job.” She says enthusiastically.
I go back to taking orders and by 6:15, Ian the guy that was supposed to be here finally shows up. “Sorry, sorry. Would say it will never happen again but traffic is a bitch.” He exclaims as I take off his apron to hand it to him.
“It’s alright. Try not to get fired.” I say and walk over to the brown head girl. “You ready?” I ask and she nods smiling. I grab one tray and she grabs the other and we walk to my car. I open the door for and she sends a thank you and I hand her the trays to hold until I get in.
I go to get in my car when I see Selene walking into the cafe. “Give me just one second.” I say and she nods. I run inside. “Hey Selene.”
She turns at the sound of my voice and her eyes go wide and then they look every where but me. “Oh hey Jordyn. How are you?”
I tilt my head in confusion. “Uh hey. What happened last night? You just left and then didn’t text back until late.” I ask.
She starts playing with her fingers, which tells me she’s nervous. “Hey.” I grab her hands. “I told you, you don’t have to be nervous around me.” I say.
“Look I know. But what happened yesterday,” she gets cut off.
“Hey I’m sorry for interrupting but my boss just called and if I don’t get to work in the next 20 minutes it’s going to be my ass.” The girl who’s name is Miranda according to the names on the cups says looking apologetic.
“Oh right. I’ll be right there.” She nods and heads back to the car. I turn my attention back to Selene who’s brows are furrowed and her eyes are filled with something I haven’t seen before.
“Who is she?” She asks pointing to Miranda.
“That’s Miranda. Look I’ve gotta go but we’ll continue this later ok.” She nods still with her brows furrowed. I smile and kiss her cheek and run back to the car. “Sorry about that. Let’s get you to work.” I say and drive off.
I pull up to the tall skyscraper of a building and help her out. I take one tray and she takes the other and we make it in time to hand out all the coffees receiving thank you and flirtatious winks. Miranda sighs in content. “Thank you-
She searches for my name.
I reach my hand out. “Jordyn.” I say smiling and shaking her hand.
“Well, thank you Jordyn. You saved me 5 bucks from bus fare and my job.” She says and we laugh.
“It’s no problem at all. I was raised to help those who are too afraid to ask for it.” I say honestly and genuinely.
She smirks. “Well you were definitely raised right. You have a good day Jordyn.” She says and then walks off and I see a hint a red tint on her cheeks when she turns to wave me goodbye. I wave back and head down to the car and to the school.
I get to the school by 7:10 and Selene had just pulled up too. Perfect. I get out the car and grab my duffel bag as she grabs her purse and goes to grab a box that looks like more books out of trunk. “Let me get that.” I say grabbing the box before she can and when I grab it she still has that look in her eyes I can’t read. “Hey are you ok?” I ask concerned.
She nods and gives a slight smile that doesn’t reach her eyes and forms that dimple. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?” She asks as we walk towards the school.
I shrug with the box in hand. “Well I don’t know. You tell me Selene. You just left yesterday without warning and when I text you, you don’t text until late that night just telling me you’ll see me today.” I say a little agitated but trying to stay calm.
We make it to her office and she opens it. I sit the box down on her desk and set my duffle on the floor. She sighs and runs her hand through her hair. “Who was that girl this morning, Jordyn?” She asks looking me in my eyes with that look again. What is it?
“I told you Miranda.” She looks at me to continue. “She’s a customer I met that morning before you came in and I saw that she was going to struggle taking all those orders for her boss and other colleagues, I decided to help her and drop her off. It was just something nice to do.” I say and I shrug.
She scoffs. “You help every attractive girl that looks in distress by driving them in your car and taking them wherever they need to go?” She says aggressively.
“Selene, what’s going on? Are you upset because I drove a girl to work or is it something else?” I ask confused and getting irritated that she still hasn’t answered my question.
“I have no right to be upset on what you choose to do with other women. We aren’t together.” She says and my eyes go wide at her words.
I shake my head. “Hol up. I thought we were dating?” I ask.
She shrugs. “So did I, until I see you driving around other girls just because you’re a good person.” She says crossing her arms.
Jealousy. “You’re jealous?” She rolls her eyes and huffs. “Selene you have nothing to be jealous of. You are the only woman I see, the only one I want.” She’s still not looking at me. “Selene?” She looks up at me. “What happened yesterday?” I ask again.
She sighs. “We didn’t talk about what our relationship was after we did what we did and I panicked because I started thinking about if that’s all you were searching for from me and that would be it between us. I needed to think but when I saw you with that girl, I felt like I had my answer. ” She says playing with her fingers. Her words take me back. Is she saying what I think she’s saying.
I shake my head and look at her frustrated. “We had sex yesterday in this very office and when I leave your first thoughts of me was not that she’s a great person and that was amazing like how i was thinking the entire time but instead it was ‘she just wanted to tap it and then dip’?!” I say agitated. She goes to say something but I stop her. “No Selene, that’s fucked up. I like you. I’ve liked you the moment I laid eyes on you junior year. Everything about you radiates beauty and grace and I just wanted to be apart of your life. Ima good person and I was fine, I was perfectly ok moving slow with you but also wasn’t going to turn you down if it’s what you wanted. We were going your pace Selene.” I grab my bag and head out the door. “But please take all the time you need.” I say and slam the door heading to the gym. It’s going to be a shitty day for everyone today.
