The sun would be rising in an hour. Obanai had been up since it had set, having clambered onto the roof and sat there, bundled up in a hoodie. He’d watched the sky turn from a flickering orange to a deep blue to a pitch near-to black, occasional glimmers of white where the stars were sprinkled about. For the whole time, Obanai had barely moved, resting his chin on his knees and hugging his arms around his legs. He had sat in the mild silence, listening to the scurrying of the nocturnal animals, but now there was sound behind him and he started to turn until he heard a familiar voice, soft but clear in the quiet.
“Jesus, Obanai,” Giyuu muttered, struggling to get onto the roof from the ladder that Obanai had propped up against the roof window. “It’s like 5am, have you been up all night?”
Obanai hummed, amused. “What do you think?”
Giyuu joined him, settling beside him and nudging Obanai gently with his shoulder. “Why do you do this to yourself?”
“I like the night. I can nap during the day,” Obanai said dismissively, shrugging.
“You have a horrible sleeping schedule,” Giyuu said, letting out a breath. “One of these days, I’m gonna tattle on you to Shinazugawa.”
Obanai rolled his eyes. “Anyway, move your legs, it’s cold and I wanna sit on your lap,” he ordered, shifting to a crouch and staring at Giyuu.
“So demanding,” Giyuu laughed, though he complied to the commands, moving so that Obanai could sit facing towards him. Obanai’s legs wrapped around his back and Giyuu held him closer, encasing him in a hug. “Comfy?”
Obanai nodded, resting his head against Giyuu’s chest. “Why’d you wake?” he asked, words muffled.
“Not really sure. Only that when I was half asleep, I realized you weren’t next to me and I went looking for you,” Giyuu said gently, resting his head on Obanai’s and closing his eyes.
“Yeah? How long did it take you to find me?” Obanai asked.
“Two minutes. Mostly because I couldn’t see.” Giyuu shifted, kissing Obanai’s forehead. “Did you sleep at all tonight?”
“No. There might’ve been a lapse where I fell asleep for a beat, but I doubt it,” Obanai said, leaning back. He tapped his lips. “Kiss.”
Giyuu smiled, cupping his face before kissing him gently, taking his time. He pulled away a minute later, pressing his lips to Obanai’s cheek and nose in turn before enveloping him in a hug again. “I love you, did you know that?” he murmured into Obanai’s hair, a content sigh stirring in his words.
“Love you more,” Obanai said lightly, burrowing into the embrace.
After a moment of comfortable silence, Giyuu said, “I think the sun’s going to rise soon. The sky is less dark than it was when I first came here.”
Obanai gave a small nod, apparently too tired to respond anymore. Giyuu suppressed a smile, saying, “Tired?”
“No,” Obanai mumbled, though he didn’t move, resting his head against Giyuu. “‘m not. I’ve done this a lot.”
Giyuu sighed. “Of course. If you’re tired, we can just go back inside, though,” he reminded him.
“‘s too stuffy in there. I wanna stay out,” Obanai said, tilting his head up to peek through his bangs, catching Giyuu’s eye. “I’m not tired,” he insisted.
“Whatever you say,” Giyuu hummed, though he clearly didn’t believe him.
They sat there for a long time without speaking, Giyuu gazing at the sky, watching as the occasional bird flit by until he realized Obanai’s breathing had steadied into sleep. He shifted, moving to be able to glance down at his boyfriend, a smile softening his lips as he saw Obanai’s closed eyes, his features relaxed. Giyuu brushed some hair from his face, pressing another kiss to Obanai’s forehead as the sun began to rise, the colors painting the sky like the subtle pink on their cheeks brushed by the gentle chill of dawn.
“‘night, Obanai,” Giyuu murmured. “I love you so much.”
In the distance, a bird began to chirp in the morning air.
