Genya rushed from side to side in a hurry. He wanted Muichiro to have the perfect birthday. He grabbed the decorations and the wrapping paper then hurried off to the Butterfly estate. Shinobu had agreed to let Genya use it to throw Muichiro a party. They wouldn’t be long, just some time during the day, because the Hashira had a lot of work to do. But given that Muichiro was still quite young and deserved as much of his childhood that they could give him before he was an adult, they allowed it.Â
Genya knocked and Aoi let him in, upon seeing him there. She helped him with the decorations as he wrapped all the presents they’d collected from the rest of the Hashira and the Kamaboko Squad. Genya quickly finished packaging the last one and then got up to go help Aoi who was struggling to reach something higher up.
It took about one hour to get all the decor up, the presents in place, and the food ready, but they were able to get it faster than if Genya had done it himself because the girls in the butterfly mansion had been eager to help him. He smiled at them and thanked the four as he ran off to find Muichiro.
Muichiro sat quietly on a log, keeping a close eye on his surroundings but also lost in thought. Today was his birthday. He only remembered because Tanjiro had wished him a Happy Birthday. And because some years ago he and Yuichiro had celebrated their birthday. It was a long time ago, but he vaguely remembered food, more luxurious than their usual meals, and some happy feelings. It was..
When was it?
It was when their parents were alive.. right?
Was it?
That was when they were a happy family.
That was before.
Then, with a jolt, Muichiro remembered the whole day.Â
It had been fun. When the twins had woken up, they were greeted with the smell of their favorite foods wafting through the air. Their mother had smiled at them and wished them a Happy Birthday, giving them both a hug and a gift. Yuichiro had made Muichiro wait to open it till later, and though he hadn’t wanted to he complied and followed his twin to the kitchen in which they found their parents setting the table. They had eaten.. eaten something they rather liked. And then their father had suggested they played outside for a little. Muichiro happily ran out and Yuichiro had followed. Although the more serious of the two had insisted that it was to watch over Muichiro, eventually he had even smiled a bit and was actually playing along with Muichiro. They ended up staying out until lunch where they ran back in and were greeted with a half a dozen presents for each of the two. Yuichiro decided that they could open them now and the two twins eagerly had, commenting on their own and smiling and laughing. All in all, it was a wonderful day. Their parents were also extremely happy, especially at the sight of the two being so excited. It had been a while since Yuichiro had smiled so widely and genuinely. And Muichiro seemed to be having the time of his life, despite them living in a more secluded area and not having anybody but his twin to be around.Â
The day had passed rather quickly, but the memory still stuck with Muichiro. It was the most recent birthday he had celebrated. He cherished the memory, now having remembered it.Â
Suddenly, there was the sound of pattering footsteps behind him and somebody calling his name. He stood quickly and held out his katana before he saw Genya and realized it was just him. He put away his katana and tilted his head to the side, confused. “Genya?” he asked.
“M-Muichiro..” Genya panted, breathing deeply, trying to catch his breath. Once he did, he said, “come with me!! Please?”
“I have training today,” Muichiro pointed out.
“Do it tomorrow.”
“I have it today.”
“Master gave you the day off.”
“Oh.”
Genya looked pleadingly at Muichiro until the Hashira gave in. “Okay… what do you need?” he asked, following Genya.
“You’ll see!”
Once they got to the butterfly mansion, Genya knocked on the door and slipped inside once it was opened. “Stay there,” he said. “I’ll be back in a minute.”
As Muichiro waited, he counted slowly. When he got to 58, Genya came back and said, “Okay, ready.”
“You took less than a minute,” Muichiro said quietly.
“What?-“
“You took 58 seconds. Two seconds under.”
“Oh- Uh- Sorry?” Genya said awkwardly.
“It’s okay.” Muichiro gave the older one what he assumed was a smile before taking Genya’s hand. “Let’s go inside.”
“Y-Yeah, let’s..” Genya stuttered, flushing at the contact.Â
They walked in and Genya led Muichiro to the living room. The second the door opened, the four girls that had helped Genya set the things up, and the Kamaboko Squad (except Inosuke, who was eating in the kitchen) exclaimed, “Happy Birthday!!”
Muichiro was surprised to say the least. He froze for a second, making everyone worried they shouldn’t have done this. But then Muichiro let out a soft sigh, followed by a quiet laugh, to everyone’s surprise. He smiled slightly and hugged Genya. “Thank you..” he whispered.
Genya smiled back happily. “Anytime!” He led Muichiro over to the others. “There’s food, presents, and a couple games the others found. We can’t do this for long because the demons won’t wait, but since it’s day time there’s less to do at the moment, so have fun right now!” Genya advised.
“Okay..!” Muichiro replied, deciding to keep the presents for last as Yuichiro had wanted him to do that one birthday many years ago.Â
