Note: Kyojuro turned into a demon because of Akaza. Akaza’s blood had seeped into Kyojuro which made him into a demon (Muzan accepted of course, which made him slightly forgive Akaza for making a Hashira into a demon). Kyojuro hadn’t accepted Akaza’s request to be a demon though (one of my Akaza headcanons is that he prefers for people to accept his req’s rather than do it forcefully), so he was able to somewhat fight his demon side like Nezuko had but not necessarily and had to go hide so he wouldn’t be tempted to eat any humans.
Giyuu was put to a mission of finding Kyojuro who had disappeared recently and no amount of searching had brought them nearer to finding him.
After the Kamaboko squad had been taken by the Kakushi, one person had been put to the task of watching over Kyojuro’s body but apparently had to help some of the people who were helping the people stuck under the train, so Kyojuro’s body had been left there. Of course, the Kakushi that was supposed to attend to Kyojuro’s body didn’t think that the body would just float away, so they figured it would be alright to leave it for a little.
But.. they’d been wrong, because when the Kakushi came back the body had disappeared and there was a hole that had been dug under where the pool of blood was. They figured somebody had dug under and taken the body and so they’d sent a demon slayer down to investigate. The hole came back up in the middle of a forest, deep where no sun hit it. So it must’ve been a demon. They had Urokodaki go down and smell the tunnel for a scent and he said that he did smell a demon but it was one scent and not two, which meant either Kyojuro’s body was taken somewhere else or.. Kyojuro had been turned into a demon. Nobody really wanted to believe this but they had to consider it.
Which was why they had sent a Hashira to find Kyojuro. And that was Giyuu, whom found he didn’t really want to do this. In the time before Kyojuro’s mission, the two had grown closer and Giyuu found he was rather fond of the Flame Hashira, taking in a lot of interest on him. They’d even gotten to the point of physical affection before.. before Kyojuro had disappeared.
And now Giyuu was dreading what he might find. Would he find the body? Would he find Kyojuro’s clothes, left behind by whoever might’ve devoured him? Would he find Kyojuro, a demon, feasting on a few people? Or would Kyojuro be like Nezuko and resist the temptation?
Whatever it was, he wished he wasn’t the one to have to find out first. Because as much as he wanted to know he didn’t want to either. And he’d have to be the news bearer to the rest of the Hashira. The Master.
He sighed and turned away, taking the road that the sun never fell due to the canopy of trees shading it. He paused at every little sound, every inch of his body tense and alert. He flinched as a mouse scutled by and his head swivled up widly when a bird flew overhead. Well, he was more than alert. He was panicked. Giyuu groaned internally at the realization and quickly shook his head to clear it. He would never get out of this mission alive like this.
A little more calmly now, he started off down the path his hand on the hilt of his sword, ready to strike at any moment. As he continued walking he found that there was a track of footprints upon one part of the woods that went off the path and through the trees. And, with further inspection, he figured they were demon footprints. This was what he must follow now.
And so he did, taking great care to make sure he followed only those and not extra footprints from other animals. It took some time before he got somewhere, actually, but eventually he found himself standing in front of a cave which he sensed there was a demon in.
Quick as flash, his katana was out and he held it in front of him as he crept inside. It took him only a second to get used to the darkness-the light in the forest had been scarce as well-so he was able to see that the cave appeared to be spacey and old, that ran down for a bit then, from what he could tell, it tipped down into a tunnel. He was at the tunnel in a second and peered down it. The demon must be down there. It would be hard to fight in such closed quarters but if it really was Kyojuro he might be able to work better with him since, despite the fact that he might’ve been turned into a demon, Giyuu knew much of Kyojuro’s moves since they’d trained together before.
And with that thought in his mind, he stepped forward and fell down the tunnel, landing a couple moments later at the bottom of it which was some sort of cramped enclosure. He immediately sensed the demon and pivoted on the spot. He saw Kyojuro-or what appeared to be Kyojuro-huddled in the corner, a rock stuffed in his mouth.
“Kyojuro..?” Giyuu whispered, his voice low, tentative.
The demon looked up, his eyes widening. He was panicked. Kyojuro made a few desperate sounds before clutching his own neck and trying to stop himself. From.. from attacking Giyuu.
The Hashira’s body tensed at this realization. But he had to continue. He positioned his katana in front of him and breathed carefully, studying Kyojuro. Giyuu’s stance was off but it was hard to get into a good one in this closed off space. He had a disadvantage here because of that.
Kyojuro flinched as Giyuu raised his katana. “How.. how many humans.. have you eaten?” Giyuu said tentatively, his voice shaking.
Kyojuro shook his head desperately then managed a quiet, “Zero.”
Relief flooded Giyuu’s body and he relaxed slightly, though he was still on guard. He doubted Kyojuro was one to lie to save himself but becoming a demon could’ve done that to him. “Are you completely sure?”
Kyojuro nodded, his eyes darting in different directions, lingering on Giyuu every now and then. “I.. I hid h..here.. I haven’t left.. since..” he whispered.
“Oh, okay,” Giyuu said, deciding that it would make sense. At the front of the cave, he’d let his eyes carefully run over where he was stepping. The footprints he’d detected had gone in but there were none going out. And there was no dirt inside of the cave near the entrance that had been lifted slightly to suggest Kyojuro had tried jumping out and onto the trees to avoid being suspected to have left. If he’d gotten back and fixed the ground, it would’ve been obvious the dirt had been a little overturned. “Do you.. do you still feel the urge to eat people? Like.. Like Nezuko? Or are you able to resist?”
“Just barely..” Kyojuro murmured, his hands still at his throat, scratching.
“Ah..” Giyuu didn’t know what to say-didn’t know what to do. If he took Kyojuro out and to the master, Muzan would find their location through Kyojuro somehow. If he brought him anywhere in a village there was a chance he would attack. Kyojuro would have to stay here. Unless there was either a way to turn him back, or.. or Kyojuro decided he didn’t mind dying to rid of one more demon.
Giyuu didn’t like that idea but he had to consider it. As much as he loved Kyojuro, if he himself got killed in the desperate act of trying to rid of the demon in the Flame Hashira-though he supposed now, Kyojuro was no longer a Hashira-then there would be two Hashira less and.. less of a chance of defeating Muzan.
“I know what you’re.. thinking,” Kyojuro said, his voice low. “And.. it would be best if I just went in the sun or you decapitate me.. We.. can’t risk.. any other people dying.. because I’m still.. alive… And so far.. there’s no way.. to turn demons back into humans.. Giyuu, please..”
The two stared at each other, quiet, unmoving. Then Giyuu shook his head. Fuck he was desperate. He needed something they could do to get Kyojuro back. They still needed Kyojuro. He still needed Kyojuro. “No.. No, there has to be another way,” he insisted, knowing full well there wasn’t.
“Just do it.. I know that you’d do.. anything to make it painless for me.. So decapitate me here before I.. do any harm.. on accident,” Kyojuro mumbled, looking like he didn’t want this any more than Giyuu did. “And.. there isn’t another way.. You should know… that..”
“I know! I just..”-Giyuu choked back a sob-“I still love you..” he finished, his voice ending in a whisper. “I can’t lose you.. too. I just.. can’t!”
Kyojuro’s gaze softened and he straightened up, though keeping his hands around his neck. “I love you.. too, Giyuu.. I always will.. But being a Hashira means.. saving other people.. even from your own.. loved ones.. Please.. at least you don’t have to.. do this by force.. no? Take this.. as a request from you.. something I need you to do for me.. For everyone.”
He was right. Of course he was right. But being right didn’t make the truth hurt any less. Giyuu bit his lip, unsure.
“Giyuu,” Kyojuro said, his voice growing stern. “Just.. do it.”
“I don’t want to, though,” Giyuu said, his tone childish. “I don’t want to..”
“But I need you to..”
“I need you, though…” Giyuu admitted, blinking furiously.
“I’ll always be here.. Just do it before I do something both of us will regret,” Kyojuro said, feeling his resistence growing weaker. “Now.”
Their eyes met and they shared a brief look of sorrow and longing before Giyuu’s whole body sagged. “Fine..” he whispered, moving into position.
And then he slashed at Kyojuro’s neck. The demon didn’t resist, only welcomed it. It felt almost peaceful this time. And Kyojuro had been right to say Giyuu would make it as painless as possible, for this death felt more like a soft breeze and a small drizzle of rain rather than the excruciating pain he might’ve felt if Giyuu hadn’t decided to use the most gentle form.
“Thank you.. Giyuu,” Kyojuro murmured. “I love you.”
Giyuu couldn’t look as he’d made the cut, but now he did. And right before Kyojuro disappeared completely, he said, “I love you too, Kyojuro.”
He mantained his composure until the demon was fully disintegrated. Then he let his body collapse onto the ground and he wept. He cried because Kyojuro was gone and because he’d killed him. He cried because Kyojuro had wanted that and because they both knew it was the best thing to do, however much it would come to hurt.
