A+ A-

Theme: Fluff

Shinobu collapsed onto the ground, tired. But at least she’d finally finished her mission. She attempted to stand up but her body wouldn’t cooporate. She was exhausted. The demon had left her pretty injured. She’d been distracted, which was not a good thing. How could she let this happen? She’d been so focused on other things, she forgot to pay close attention to the demon’s powers and got herself severly hurt. She limped forward, pushing herself up, only to fall back down. As she walked—or, more like, crawled—back home, she took the time to look around. It was almost dawn, but demons could still be anywhere. Although she had no idea how she would gain the strength to fight back. She grew closer to her mansion, finding the energy to move forward. But as she got to the door, her body collapsed onto the step, and she fell, feeling useless. She would’ve stayed there for hours if Giyuu hadn’t come around, finding her there. He looked alright, but his arm was hurt. Not too much, from what she could see. She didn’t want to be seen in such a vulnerable state by Giyuu, of all people, but she had no choice other than to call out his name meekly. He turned from where he was talking and noticed her, somewhere inbetween the plants. He walked over and bent down.

“Kocho..? What happened to you?” he murmured, picking her up with his good arm. “Are you hurt?”

“No shit…” Shinobu rolled her eyes. “Get me inside, will you?” she asked. She hated asking him for help, but she really didn’t have a choice.

“Mm, okay,” Giyuu said, without another thought. He carried her in, making sure to not push on any of the apparent injuries. “What happened?” he repeated, as he found his way around the estate.

“Demon..”

“Kizuki?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“Distracted.”

“Ah.”

He decided not to comment further on this, fearing that if he did, she would snap and break her neck or something. So he continued walking until he found Aoi who quickly escorted him to a room where he could lay Shinobu down.

“How do you feel?” Giyuu asked, looking sincerely worried.

“Shitty.”

“Oh.”

“None of my wounds are really deep, but they did bleed a lot, throughout the time.” Shinobu shifted slightly, then flinched. “It fucking hurts.”

Giyuu sighed. “You should be more careful, Kocho.” He looked away.

“Yeah, I know.” She looked irritated. “And.. I was but.. You know..” she mumbled.

“Distractions. They could get you killed. This isn’t like a game, you know what you signed up for, so act like you know how to act, because you aren’t going to achieve anything but failure if you let your mind wander elsewhere.”

It was perhaps the most he had ever said to her at once. And it had to be advice. But.. he was right. She’d been too careless.

“Mm. I’ll keep that in mind.” She huffed. “You can leave now. You don’t have to stay here,” she pointed out.

“Yes but.. you always help me. Can’t I do it in return? Just.. let me help you,” he looked somewhat solemn.

“Your arm is injured.”

“Not much. I just came here to get it checked, but otherwise it’s fine.”

“You should go to Aoi and get yourself healed. You can leave after. It’s not an obligation to stay here with me.”

“I know. But I want to.”

“It’s not always about what you want, Tomioka. It’s about what you must do. You should go get fixed up and then continue your training. You should rest.”

“Then.. I need to stay here. You aren’t the only one who is able to help people.” Giyuu was exhasperated by now. Why did she really not want him there?

“Yes, but you should also take care of yourself.” Shinobu hid her face in her hands. He must pity her. That was why he was staying with her, right? She didn’t want his pity.

“I can do that while taking care of you as well.”

“I’m not a child!” She snapped. She’d moved too quickly. She winced.

Giyuu sighed and stood up, perching on the bed. “Sorry. I just meant, I can help you. I know you’ve grown to feel as though you should help others and keep to yourself, but you should also be cared for from others. You aren’t all that different from the rest of us.”

Shinobu was quiet for a minute. Then she said, not wanting to seem weak, “Then why do you always claim to be different from the Hashira? Shinazugawa and Iguro always say you think you’re above us. But that’s not it, is it?” She was curious. He’d always been different, as in, he’d been keeping to himself, very quiet, almost always alone. He’d caught her eye from the beginning. And perhaps not only just from curiousity. Something else, as well.

“I.. That’s… that’s not the point..!” Giyuu said quickly, changing the subject back. “The point is-“

“But it is the point! You keep away from us way more than I do, and here you are telling me to let myself in. Why do you say that if you’re the one staying away? Why do you?” She was irritated now.

“You shouldn’t strain yourself so much, you’ll just get more hurt,” he said, ignoring the questions.

“That doesn’t matter. I’ll be fine. Just answer the damn question! Why won’t you tell me? Are you scared?”

He was so silent, she looked over at him, examining his expression. Had she gone too far? She went up to say sorry but the door opened and Aoi walked in. She paused as she entered the room, the uncomfortable silence saying a million things. “Wrong timing? I can leave, if you want,” she started, moving to step out.

“No, that’s okay. You can stay. I’ll leave you to tend to her. May I talk to you later? I need my arm examined, if it isn’t too much work,” Giyuu said, getting up. He walked out of the room without another word.

“O-Of course,” Aoi stammered, confused. She turned to Shinobu for answers but got nothing. “Ah.. I’ll get to you right now..”

Time skip, 2 hours

Aoi found Giyuu sitting on the ground in the garden. He hadn’t known where to stay so he’d wandered around then found how peaceful it was outside and settled down there. Aoi opened the door and said, “I’m ready. Follow me.” She turned and Giyuu followed her to a room where he sat on a stool as she examined his arm. “The wound isn’t deep, and no bones have been fractured. You should be fine in a little. Make sure to wash it properly, though, you musn’t let it get infected or it’ll get worse. Okay?” she asked, tapping his head.

Giyuu nodded and started to get up to leave. Then he remembered Shinobu and said, “How is Kocho?”

“She’s okay. She should be back to normal in around a week or two. She’s awake right now, would you like to see her before she rests again?” Aoi offered.

“Maybe later.. I’m going to go change,” Giyuu said, thanking Aoi for her help.

“Of course. If you need anything else, I’ll be in the kitchen for the next hour, unless something comes up, alright?” She gave him a small smile before turning to wash her hands.

“Alright.”

Time skip, the next day

Giyuu came back to the estate to check on Shinobu. He’d come back from a mission recently and decided it wouldn’t hurt to go back. If anyone asked why he was there, he would just say he wanted to make sure the wound on his arm hadn’t opened up more during the mission. He knocked on the door and Aoi let him in. She smiled. “Are you here to see Shinobu?” she asked, giving him a knowing look.

“Ah.. uh.. no?” he said tentatively.

“RIght.. How’s your arm feeling?”

“It’s okay, I’m just here for a, uh, check-up.”

“Alright. Shinobu’s still in the same room. She just woke up so she might be a little grumpy.”

“Okay. Thank you.”

Giyuu set off to Shinobu’s room, wondering how Aoi knew what he was actually there for. He knocked on the door and heard a faint, “Come in.” He walked in, closing the door behind him. Shinobu looked up and realized who it was. “Oh. Tomioka.”

“I’m.. sorry for not answering your questions yesterday.. I just.. I couldn’t,” he admitted quietly.

“It’s fine. What do you want?” She still seemed annoyed.

“I wanted to see how you were doing.”

“Hm. Why?”

“I told you! Because I really do care.”

“And why do you?”

“Because.. I.. I don’t know,” he said, sighing.

Shinobu waved for him to sit down, and he did, letting his body relax slightly onto the chair. “How do you feel today?” he said, looking up.

She met his gaze for a second, then quickly looked away. His worried expression reminded her of Kanae. But.. the feeling was different. There was, of course, still the annoyed part of her that didn’t want to be babied. To be cared for so dearly. Then the part that was somewhat thankful for being worried about. But the last part confused her. It wasn’t anything that she’d felt with her sister. It was like.. like she was embarrassed to have her see her as this, but she was happy that it was him. Why was she happy? “I feel fine. Mostly the same, although the pain is a little less.”

“Ah. That’s good.” Giyuu felt himself flush. Why was he worrying about her? She would be fine. She’d definitely gotten worse injuries before. This was probably not much. She hadn’t actually needed his help, Aoi could work wonders. He went to get up, feeling as though he was being a bother.

“Wait-!” Shinobu said, lifting her arm slightly as he turned to leave.

“What?” he asked, looking back at her.

“Where.. where are you going?” she mumbled. She felt her face grow hot. “Can you.. stay? You don’t have anything to do now, do you?” she asked.

“No, I don’t,” Giyuu agreed, sitting back down.

They sat silently for a little. The air was thick with awkwardness. But there was a hint of comfort in it, as well. And a little something else. Something neither would ever admit to each other, not even if they were threatened by death to do so. At least, not now.

___

As the days passed, Giyuu started visiting her whenever he found the time. He somehow managed to come over every day, making sure she was alright. She was mostly healed by the end of the week, as Aoi had promised, and she could now stand up and do things on her own. In the time she’d been healing, Giyuu and her had talked a lot. They’d discussed many subjects, such as missions. Although most of the time their topics strayed from their jobs and to more personal things. She recalled one particular conversation. One that stuck with her, but the reason why was unknown, at least right now.

In the conversations, Giyuu had been talking about the other Hashira, because Shinobu had asked how they’d been. Though it had only been over a week, she still wanted to keep herself updated.

“Kanroji is okay, as well. I think she and Iguro are growing closer to each other. They seem to be really happy when together, and, well, I don’t know. But yes, that is all,” Giyuu had said.

“Oh? That’s good, I’m happy for them. They should really get together, it’s obvious how much they love the other. It’s too bad neither realizes the feeling is mutual,” Shinobu stated.

“Mhm. Are they really obvious? Or are we just good at noticing?” he cocked his head to the side as he said this, looking thoughtful.

“Perhaps both. As Hashira we do have to notice certain things that some may not. But the two are quite obvious, so it makes it easier.”

“True.”

They were both silent for a second before Shinobu spoke up. “Do you know any other Hashira with.. any that might also be in love?” she asked tentatively.

“No.. Maybe.. ah.. I don’t know,” Giyuu admitted.

“I know one.”

“Do you? Who is he?” Giyuu asked.

“Funny to assume they’re male,” Shinobu said quietly.

“Oh? Well, I was just saying because the only.. the only other female is.. you? Wait.. do you-?” he started, leaning closer.

“You caught me,” Shinobu laughed, putting her hands in the air.

Giyuu’s eyes widened. “Oh! Who is it?”

“What?” She looked confused. “What do you mean?”

“Uh.. who is it you like? Do I know them?” he corrected.

“Oh.. Yes, you do.” She looked nervous.

“Who?” Giyuu was staring at her intently. There was something in his eyes, an emotion she couldn’t translate. It reminded her of jealousy. Though that wouldn’t make sense. So what was it?

“Ah.. maybe one day you’ll know.” She sighed.

“Oh. Okay,” he leaned back into his chair, looking a little disappointed and—strangely—on edge. “I’ll go now, alright?” he said, picking up his bag.

“Oh.. yeah.. okay,” she nodded. She watched him as he picked up his things to leave. Before he closed the door, he looked back at her with a sort of look of.. longing. But before she could figure out what that meant, he’d closed the door behind him and left.

It was as if she wanted him to like her. She’d only said she had a crush to get some sort of reaction from him. She’d wanted to see if he would react in any way, but what she got was minimal and told her little to nothing. But that didn’t matter. She didn’t actually have a crush. Right..? Like, even if she did who would it be? It couldn’t be Giyuu.

But then again.. The second she thought that, she flushed deeply and quickly scurried under her covers in case Aoi came in. She sighed at herself, annoyed at how complicated emotions made things. Whilst doctors knew a lot about bodies, illnesses, antidotes, and so on, emotions were always a mystery. She wished she knew more. But nobody could fully understand them anyways.

She sat up when she heard a knock on the door. “Come in!” she called out, making sure her temperature was back to normal and she was no longer flushed. She shifted in the bed and propped herself against the pillows as Giyuu strode in, holding a bag. He set it next to her then said, “Kanroji wanted to give you a present, she said she was glad you were nearly all the way healed and that she would stop by and visit if she hadn’t had a lot of missions at the moment.” He sat down on a chair set out for him and said, “how do you feel today?”

“I’m fine, thanks. I can probably go about outside now, but I’m a bit tired.” Shinobu nodded in acknowledgement to Mitsuri’s present with a smile, then responded with, “and how about you? How’ve you been holding up?”

“Alright. And have you been resting enough?” A small crease of worry formed on Giyuu’s face, making Shinobu’s heart flutter.

“Yeah, but I got up earlier and was walking around the house trying to get around and about. I think I over did it because I nearly collapsed on my way back,” she admitted.

“You should be more careful.”

“I’m a Hashira, I can handle it.”

“You’re also human.”

“Yes well..” she paused. “I’m fine, Tomioka-San. I’ll be fine.”

“You could get hurt again.”

“Why do you care so much?” she shot back, getting a little irritated.

What she didn’t expect was for Giyuu to say, “Because I love you,” right before realizing what he’d blurted out and flushing deeply, hiding his face in his hands.

Shinobu was shocked into silence and the quiet would’ve stretched on if it wasn’t for a bird that had managed to slip into the window. It landed on the foot of her bed and the two Hashira looked at it. The bird looked back. They stared at each other for a little before Shinobu broke out in a fit of laughter, unsure why she was laughing, why she’d not responded, and why they were staring at a bird. The sound startled the bird away but Giyuu smiled slightly. Shinobu’s laughter was beautiful. But suddenly it stopped and he met his eyes with hers, which were wide. “What?” he asked, wondering why she was staring at him so intently.

“You smiled..” she breathed.

“I’ve.. smiled before, you know..” he felt the need to say, confused.

“Yes but only ever from food.”

“Well.. uh..” he hesitated. “Because what I said before was true.. that’s why..” he muttered, half hoping she wouldn’t understand. But of course, she did and she turned bright red as the topic round back.

They were quiet again. And then Shinobu said, “Well.. I love you too..” She said it so quietly she was sure Giyuu hadn’t heard. But his ears were trained to hear the smallest noises and he heard, blushing more.

“Really..?” he asked hopefully.

“Really..”

“Why?”

“What do you mean?”

“Why do you li- uh.. love? Like? Me?”

“Because.. well.. I .. I just do!”

“But why..“

“If I asked you why you liked me, what would you say?”

“Uhm.”

“Exactly.”

They stared at each other for a couple minutes, unsure what to do now. Then, Giyuu got up, nervous. “I’m.. I’m going to go now.. I’ll come back soon.. I have a mission that might take a while.. Bye for now..” he muttered, gathering his things.

Shinobu nodded and watched him leave before collapsing onto her bed and sighing happily.

Time skip, a couple (you choose) days

Finally, Shinobu was able to go onto her missions. She had trained a little to make sure she was in fit condition before she took off to her first mission after a while of none. She easily decapitated the demons then set off to go somewhere else when she heard fighting from somewhere near. She followed the noise and found Giyuu fighting several lowermoons and a big swarm of lesser demons. She quickly noticed his bleeding arm and how he struggled to keep up with the injury. She jumped in, clearing her way by injecting several demons with her poison.

“Kocho-?” Giyuu asked, startled. He nearly got hit, barely ducking in time.

“Don’t lose your focus!” Shinobu ordered.

Giyuu complied and they continued fighting them off. Once Giyuu killed the final demon, he sighed heavily and leaned against the nearest tree. “You didn’t have to help me,” he muttered, breathing slowly as to control his blood circulation.

“Let me help,” Shinobu whispered back, moving switfly to his side. She inspected his wound. “You helped me before, so let me pay you back.”

Giyuu gave her a faint smile. “Okay then..” he said.

“Your wound looks deep but not quite to the bone. On the scale of 1-10 how much does it hurt?” she asked.

“6, maybe. Not the worst I’ve had of course.” Giyuu winced as Shinobu poked the edge lightly.

“Okay. I’ll treat you back at the mansion. Have any more missions today?” she asked.

“No. Not yet,” he answered.

“Alright, let’s get you back, then.” Shinobu looked up and realized how close she was to him. She backed away slightly, flushing.

“Eh.. uh.. yeah..” Giyuu mumbled, also having noticed.

Neither moved. And then Shinobu, figuring Giyuu wouldn’t make the first move this time, stood on her tip toes and kissed him lightly on his lower lip, pulling away quickly. She looked up at him, searching for a reaction. She found a wide-eyed, flushed Giyuu staring back at her.

Giyuu quickly realized he should probably kiss her back and pulled her chin up to his, kissing her fully. Shinobu was surprised and nearly forgot to kiss back, before she wrapped her arms around his neck. They stayed like this for another minute before they both pulled away for air.

Shinobu let her arm fall, accidentally grazing Giyuu’s wound as she did. Giyuu winced but pretended not to have right after.

“Shit. Sorry,” Shinobu apologized backing away.

“No it’s okay-” Giyuu said quickly. He laughed softly, to Shinobu’s amazement.

She stared at him and Giyuu paused. “Eh?” he asked, confused. Did he look weird laughing?- He was about to apologize when Shinobu laughed.

“What?!” he huffed.

“Nothing.. you’re adorable,” she giggled. Giyuu looked confused but laughed along with her.

Chapter 20
