The day for Final Selection had finally arrived. Giyuu was both vibrating with ecstatic anticipation and a giddy nervousness as he was handed the katana he would use. Urokodaki waved him and Sabito off after a lengthy hug and they set off on their way towards the mountain.

“Are you sure we’ll make it?” Giyuu asked, his hand opening and closing around his katana handle.

“I’m sure we will,” Sabito assured him with a smile that made Giyuu melt. “And if either of—or neither of us—don’t make it, at least we tried, right? Besides, we’ll be together no matter what.”

“But if one of us dies and the other doesn’t… we won’t be together,” Giyuu mumbled with a frown.

“Yeah, well, how about I give you something, then?” Sabito asked.

They had reached the site, the heavy scent of wisteria making Giyuu bring a hand up to his nose, covering it momentarily. There were lanterns scattered about and the purple flowers seemed to glow iridescently around them as night fell, the sky overhead barely visible through the trees.

“What do you mean?” Giyuu asked, turning to him with a curious gaze.

Sabito smiled, tugging Giyuu’s hand towards him, pulling him forward. He brought Giyuu’s hand up to his mouth, placing a gentle kiss on his knuckles. Giyuu flushed. “S…Sabito?”

“Giyuu, if you die, I will never forget you. Never. And if I die, just know that I always loved you, alright?” Sabito said, cradling Giyuu’s hand and pulling him closer by his waist.

Love. He loved him.

“I… I’ll… I’ll always love you too,” Giyuu murmured, resting his forehead against Sabito’s, a small smile curving his lips up. His cheeks were flushed pink, which had nothing to do with the breeze that swooped through the clearing.

The chatter of the people slowly entering around them faded as Sabito’s hands lifted, cupping Giyuu’s face. Their eyes met and for a moment, it was just the two of them, together, together. They were safe, Giyuu was safe, Sabito was safety. And he loved him, and Sabito loved him, and Giyuu loved him, and… and it was alright.

Sabito’s eyes fluttered close and Giyuu hesitated. Then Sabito was leaning closer and all Giyuu could comprehend was lips against his own, his eyes shutting, leaving him with only the sense of the sweet taste of Sabito’s mouth. Until it was pulled away and he longed for more, but he knew it was not the time.

Sabito smiled gently at him and dropped his hands down, holding Giyuu’s in his own.

“Forever, okay?” Sabito said reassuringly. “I love you forever.”

“I… I love you too,” Giyuu whispered, breathless.

Sabito, against the purple light of the flowers and lanterns, Sabito, all his. He looked lovely. Like an angel. Sometimes, Sabito would talk about his scar detracting from himself. But the scar meant nothing. It was just another line in this… masterpiece of a boy.

“I love you so much,” Giyuu mumbled.

Sabito kissed his cheek then let go of one of his hands, pulling him towards the arc which stretched over the entrance to Final Selection.

In the end, it didn’t matter how strong or how much love there had been before. It didn’t actually matter. Not when it was life and death, not when you were being tested to fight with your life and the test could just as well kill you. Not when it did kill you.

One second, Sabito was by his side. The next Giyuu had woken up. Final Selection had ended, somehow. He didn’t know what happened. He looked for Sabito.

There was someone there—Murata. He said… He said that Giyuu had gotten hurt, that Sabito had come in to assist. That in the end, there was only one demon left in all of Final Selection. But that final demon had killed Sabito. That nobody—nobody—else had died. Except Sabito.

Sabito.

Giyuu didn’t believe it. He couldn’t believe it. How could he have been… how could he have been so useless? So…

And.

And all he could think of was how he could never be happy again, how he could never feel Sabito’s hands in his own, wake up to Sabito’s voice, sink into Sabito’s arms.

How could he be so selfish? How could he be so selfish?!

Giyuu trudged home alone. He was alone. Again. All over again. And it was his fault, it was all his fault—

Urokodaki greeted him. There was no Sabito there, and the absence was evident.

There was a brief moment of comfort. Or maybe it was longer. Whatever it was, it was gone much too fast. It was nothing if Sabito wasn’t there.

Giyuu retired to his room. The empty one. The extra futon, still not made. Sabito’s extra kimono folded neatly by the side. Giyuu buried himself under the covers. Then he was crying. He didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t do anything. He was all alone.

He woke up at night, once. His eyes caught onto the sight of Sabito’s kimono in the darkness. He crawled over to it, avoiding Sabito’s futon. He unfolded the kimono, letting it drape over his knees. He took off his own, slipping on some of the clothing Urokodaki had provided the two.

He crept through the house, finding a drawer with supplies. He took scissors, thread, and a needle. Then he went back to his room, shut the door quietly, and sat down. He cut slowly, carefully. It couldn’t be undone if he messed up.

He cut across the middle of his, and then Sabito’s kimonos. He threaded the needle and placed the two kimonos side by side. He hemmed the edges of the left side of Sabito’s kimono and the right of his own. Then sewed the two together. He ignored the sting when he pricked his fingers from carelessness, focusing only on sewing. It was a slow process, he didn’t know if it would work.

By morning, he had finally finished. Light was streaming through the window and he rubbed his eyes, forcing himself to ignore the tiredness.

There was a knock at the door. Giyuu shoved the things under his blanket and gave a half hearted hum in response.

The door opened and Urokodaki peeked in.

“…You didn’t sleep, did you?” he asked, concern lacing his voice.

“I… I did,” Giyuu lied. “I just need time to catch up with sleeping…”

Urokodaki obviously didn’t believe him, but nodded nevertheless. “Your uniform has been tailored and arrived. Your katana will come in a couple days.”

Giyuu gave a quick nod. “Okay.”

“I’ll… make breakfast for the tw-… you,” Urokodaki murmured, handing him the uniform then shutting the door and leaving.

Giyuu let out a breath. He changed into his uniform, then lifted the haori he’d constructed, eyes tracing over the haphazardly cut line. He frowned slightly. It would have to do. It was better than it might’ve been, had he not watched Tsutako sew for hours sometimes in the past. He pulled it on slowly, gaze staying on the hexagonal pattern for a moment.

Then he stood, put away his things, and walked out.

If Urokodaki noticed the haori, he said nothing. There was nothing to say. Sabito wasn’t there anymore; it didn’t matter anymore. Nothing did. Except Sabito.
