Chapter 1
I was lounging on my bed, flipping through my business studies notes, trying to make sense of concepts that felt utterly irrelevant to my chosen path in science. Honestly, I regretted those elective choices more than I cared to admit. I mean, who decided that I needed to know the intricacies of supply and demand when all I wanted was to dissect frogs and experiment with cool chemical reactions?Â
As I attempted to focus, a loud bang resonated from the living room, followed by a muffled voice exclaiming, “Oh crap…”
Curiosity piqued, I set my notes aside and made my way to the source of the commotion, my mind racing with all sorts of scenarios. Was there a mini-explosion? Had someone summoned a rogue cat? As I entered the living room, I was met with a striking sight.
A tall girl with brown-dark skin and beautifully braided hair was crouched over a pile of boxes, looking slightly flustered. She glanced up and smiled warmly, her expression instantly putting me at ease.
“Hi, you’re my roomie? I’m Zuri,” she said, her voice cheerful and inviting.
“Nova Flynn,” I replied, offering a half-smile that quickly turned into a genuine grin. “Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too!” she beamed, standing up and placing her boxes carefully on a nearby stool.Â
We spent the next couple of hours talking, sharing stories about our lives, and doing random things—unpacking, rearranging furniture, and attempting to connect the TV to Wi-Fi.Â
Spoiler alert: we might have ended up watching a two-hour tutorial on how to set it up instead of actually doing it. At one point, I suggested we use a potato as a remote just to see her reaction. She laughed so hard I thought she might fall over.
“You know, if it works, I’m definitely going to make that a TikTok challenge,” Zuri said, still chuckling.
As the evening rolled on, I felt like we could’ve been the stars of our own sitcom, complete with slapstick moments and witty banter. By the time 5 PM hit, I excused myself and headed back to my room, still giggling at the thought of using a potato as a universal remote.
I plopped down on my bed, pulled out my phone, and decided to dive into YouTube. I needed a good laugh to shake off the stress of business studies. As I scrolled through the endless sea of videos, I stumbled upon one titled “Cats vs. Cucumbers.” Seriously, who thought of that? The mere idea was ridiculous.
I clicked on it and, boy, did I strike gold! Within minutes, I was doubled over, tears streaming down my face as I watched cats jump three feet in the air at the sight of a cucumber. I mean, who knew cucumbers could be so terrifying? One cat took off so fast it nearly crashed into a wall, and I couldn’t help but laugh so hard I almost fell off my bed.
“Cucumbers: 1, Cats: 0,” I muttered to myself, shaking my head at the absurdity.
After what felt like a marathon of cat videos and a few too many laughs, I finally decided it was time to call it a night. Tomorrow was the first day of school, and I needed to at least pretend to look somewhat awake. I turned off my phone, snuggled into my blanket, and drifted off to sleep
