Luo Jinxiao muttered an expletive under her breath, hastily putting on her clothes as she hurried out the door. Qu Weiyin’s room was empty as well, everything neatly arranged without any signs of her return.
Given that it was early morning and the sun hadn’t yet risen, where could Qu Weiyin have gone?
The courtyard door creaked open, and Luo Jinxiao quickly turned around, only to find Qiongqi and Tang Lanner emerging. They had been stirred awake by the sound of her frantic running, appearing groggy as they stepped outside.
“What are you doing up so early?†Tang Lanner yawned.
“Qu Weiyin is missing!†Luo Jinxiao rushed past them, her hair hastily tied up and trailing behind her, demonstrating her evident panic.
“Missing?†Tang Lanner paused, her eyes widening as she hurried to catch up with Luo Jinxiao, and the three of them dashed out the door together.
The villa was situated on the edge of the town, and with so few people outside, it felt particularly desolate. Luo Jinxiao still couldn’t sense Qu Weiyin’s presence, causing her anxiety to escalate.
Could it be that she left because she couldn’t resolve her inner turmoil?
No, Luo Jinxiao reassured herself. Qu Weiyin wasn’t the type to act recklessly. She might have just taken a walk.
But why didn’t she say anything?
Qiongqi blinked its large eyes and suddenly took off running down a narrow alleyway. Luo Jinxiao paused for a moment before remembering that Qiongqi could pick up scents and quickly followed suit.
The three of them ran through the town behind Qiongqi, the sky gradually brightening. Early-morning vendors were already setting up their stalls. Upon seeing the three of them, the vendors hurriedly stepped aside in surprise.
Luo Jinxiao felt an unsettling sense in their gazes but, anxious as she was, she didn’t dwell on it and pressed onward into a main street.
This was where she had bought the Dragon Whisker Crispy the day before. Now, it was in disarray, with shattered wood and stones scattered everywhere, along with some fallen fruits and vegetables.
It looked as though there had just been a fight. Frowning, Luo Jinxiao scanned the area and approached the most damaged shop, where the shopkeeper wore a grim expression as he tried to rearrange tables and chairs.
“Excuse me, did a woman in red come by here?†she asked.
The shopkeeper was a middle-aged man with a wrinkled face, who looked up and said, “You’re talking about that demon? Just a while ago, several celestial elders came here, chasing after the demon, and it turned into complete chaos. We common folks couldn’t dare to watch; by the time I came out, everything was already like this!â€
“Do you recognize those celestial elders?†The middle-aged man suddenly grabbed Luo Jinxiao’s clothing, refusing to let her go. “We’re all just mortals. Who’s going to pay for all this damage!â€
Luo Jinxiao had no time to argue with him. She pulled her arm away, leaving the mess in the shop to Tang Lanner, and turned to fly toward the town’s exit.
Below, the townspeople gasped in surprise, but Luo Jinxiao paid them no heed. Her worry deepened; if that were the case, Qu Weiyin had been targeted by the celestial sects.
She couldn’t tell which sects were involved or if it was serious.
At this point, she could feel traces of spiritual energy without needing Qiongqi to lead the way. The two of them, one flying and the other riding a sword, hastened toward the mountains outside the town.
Meanwhile, on a low cliff, hundreds of people formed a surrounding formation, confronting a lone figure at the edge. The figure, clad in red, held a crimson sword, alertly watching the onlookers.
“Qu Weiyin, you must stop fleeing! The demon race has thrown us into chaos. As the demon lord, surrender now, and we celestial factions may spare your life!†boomed a rotund middle-aged man, brandishing his sword at her.
As soon as he finished speaking, several multicolored waves of spiritual energy charged toward Qu Weiyin, but with little effort, she raised her hand to deflect them.
Gritting her teeth, she surveyed her surroundings, glaring furiously. Many of the faces were familiar to her; numerous factions from the martial world were intermingled within the group—Deathless Sect, Qingyan Palace, Baiyue Sect, Tianji Tower—both renowned and lesser-known, all wore expressions of hostility.
She took a step back, gripping her sword tightly.
At least the Wuhui Sect isn’t here, she suddenly thought.
“Qu Weiyin! You traitor to the celestial realm, you’ve caused us so much suffering!†someone shouted loudly, eliciting a chorus of angry agreement from the crowd.
At the accusation, Qu Weiyin let out a derisive laugh. She didn’t feel the need to defend herself; perhaps there was no point, for no one would believe her.
She didn’t want to listen to their taunts; it was better to be regarded as a thorn in their side, a splinter in their flesh.
A disciple from Qingyan Palace suddenly shouted, “Why waste words on this demon? With so many powerful experts here, she surely can’t resist for long. Let’s bind her and throw her into the Changming Tower to turn into blood, and then the world will be at peace!â€
The commotion stirred by Qu Weiyin was like a pebble striking a pond, sending ripples throughout the crowd. Since she had only been dodging attacks and hadn’t struck back yet, they began to feel overconfident, thinking Qu Weiyin was not as terrifying as the rumors suggested.
“Qu Weiyin! Are you really refusing to surrender?†the middle-aged man pressed again.
Qu Weiyin’s phoenix eyes flashed with disdain, her brows arching slightly as she coldly replied, “Stop the nonsense.â€
“Then we won’t be courteous any longer!†the middle-aged man declared. He suddenly charged forward, his spiritual power transforming into a green dragon that shot into the sky from behind him, diving down toward Qu Weiyin.
Qu Weiyin raised her hand to defend herself as golden light flickered around her, aligning with a sliver of sunlight peeking from the horizon, creating a brilliant glow.
The sight of hundreds of people attacking a single individual was quite rare; even the low cliff nearly quaked under the pressure. Qu Weiyin stomped her foot and ascended into the air, floating above the chaos.
The golden light enveloped her like a shield, blocking the incoming spiritual attacks. The sounds of clashing swords and blades echoed in the air, numerous light trails bursting in the sky, almost painting half the mountain in vibrant colors.
The celestial cultivators unleashed barrage after barrage of lethal moves, hundreds of spiritual weapons charging toward Qu Weiyin, but she deflected them with the elegant sweep of her flowing sleeves. The battle was undoubtedly lopsided, as Qu Weiyin was merely defending herself without launching a single counterattack.
She gritted her teeth, finding it increasingly difficult to cope.
Yet, the celestial sect members showed no mercy; they seized the opportunity to capture her alive, and the hatred visible on their faces was unmistakable.
With all the commotion, Luo Jinxiao could not have missed it. She suddenly looked up, startled by the sound of thunderous clashes, her heart instantly suspended in dread.
This wasn’t her first time feeling this way, fearing that something might happen to Qu Weiyin while she couldn’t reach her in time.
With anger flooding her veins, her body twisted into an indistinct shadow, vanishing from where she stood.
An overwhelming gust of wind surged onto the densely packed battlefield, crashing down from above and exploding outward, sending hundreds of people flying backward as if caught in a blizzard’s icy embrace. Strangely, despite it being midsummer, an intense chill filled the air and suffused the mountains.
The celestial cultivators finally managed to steady themselves, and upon focusing their gazes, they saw a woman in blue standing before them, her black hair billowing wildly in the wind and her dark eyes filled with evident fury and a murderous aura.
The originally beautiful and ethereal woman now exuded an intensely oppressive presence, causing a deep tremor in the hearts of those who faced her.
Descending alongside her was an overwhelming pressure; without needing to unleash a trace of spiritual energy, her divine presence alone was enough to make a few cultivators of lower realms drop their spiritual weapons.
“Elder, who is she?†a disciple from the Deathless Sect asked quietly of the middle-aged man.
“She seems to be from the Wuhui Sect, I think her surname is Luo, but I can’t discern the aura she carries. She’s definitely a formidable opponent,†the man whispered while retreating.
“Is she stronger than the demon lord?â€
“Perhaps,†the man grimaced, his expression taut with reluctance and anger. After finally managing to catch Qu Weiyin today, was he about to be interrupted again?
Qu Weiyin watched as Luo Jinxiao appeared before her, her heart a tumult of emotions. But Luo Jinxiao wasn’t looking at her; it was clear that she was genuinely angry.
“Why aren’t you fighting back and letting them bully you?†Luo Jinxiao suddenly asked, her tone filled with irritation. She tilted her head slightly, revealing half of her profile, shadowed by her hair.
Qu Weiyin lowered her eyes, remaining silent.
“Luo Xiaoxian! It’s a pleasure to meet you!†the middle-aged man exclaimed suddenly, cupping his hands in a salute towards her.
Luo Jinxiao said nothing, her gaze icy. Wujie in her hand glowed with a faint white light.
“The person behind you is the demon lord Qu Weiyin, whom we in the celestial realm have been searching for. It is she who has led the demon race in wreaking havoc and causing suffering for three long years. If you have any sense, you should stay out of this matter,†the man said with a feigned smile.
“What evidence do you have proving she’s responsible?†Luo Jinxiao countered, her voice steady but unwavering.
“Years ago, our Deathless Sect was nearly exterminated. Half the sect witnessed her bloodthirsty brutality and the slaughter of our fellow cultivators. How can there be no evidence!†a disciple from the Deathless Sect shouted.
“You admit that you invaded the demon realm unprovoked and slaughtered indiscriminately; isn’t that also harming innocent lives?†Luo Jinxiao retorted, her voice fierce.
The Deathless Sect disciple stammered a few words before raising his voice, “We at the Deathless Sect kill demons, not people.â€
Luo Jinxiao was nearly driven to laughter by his absurdity. Drawing her sword behind her, she stepped forward, forcing him to retreat.
“What kind of person can say such a thing? What’s the difference between an innocent demon and a human, and by what right can you decide who lives and dies? Today, if I declare you a demon, can I then freely take your life?â€
Her words were strong and commanding, and the hundred people in front suddenly fell silent. They all knew that the Deathless Sect’s actions were unjust, but since the casualties were demons, they had turned a blind eye.
“Qu Weiyin is a demon but has never harmed the innocent. Today, I will reveal the truth to you, whether you believe it or not. She has endured humiliation for three years, destroyed the formation diagram, and killed the true mastermind, Yougui. Otherwise, do you really think the demons on the streets vanished overnight? Were they afraid of you incompetent fools?â€
“She is a thousand times and a hundred times better than you so-called righteous cultivators!†Luo Jinxiao’s gaze locked onto the members of the Deathless Sect and other celestial factions, enunciating each word.
“Preposterous! What evidence do you have to prove that demons are truly impotent? We have all seen her commit acts of violence over the years!†someone in the crowd shouted.
“Who has witnessed Qu Weiyin killing someone? Step forward! If you’re lying, don’t blame me for being rude,†Luo Jinxiao’s eyes glinted with the promise of violence, and she felt Yougui shaking in her hand.
Several people in front retreated, and the man stomped his foot in frustration. “Luo Jinxiao, don’t forget you are a disciple of the Wuhui Sect. Are you truly willing to betray your sect to protect this demon?â€
“My master hasn’t spoken! Who do you think you are? Yes, I, Luo Jinxiao, will protect Qu Weiyin today. Even if all six realms turn against her, they will have to step over my dead body first!â€
“Qu Weiyin may have a kind heart and refrain from striking back, but I am the opposite. Before you ants, I will show no mercy.â€
The lush grass and foliage beneath her feet gradually froze over, transforming into crystalline structures. Luo Jinxiao stood in a flowing blue garment, her long sleeves billowing like wings as she occupied her space in the heavens. Divine energy descended upon her, enveloping the land around them.
The temperature dropped sharply, and a palpable aura of power radiated from her, filling the air with an electric tension. The celestial cultivators, who had initially felt bold in their numbers, now began to feel the weight of Luo Jinxiao’s presence as they were faced with an overwhelming force.
“Luo Jinxiao! You—” one of the celestial disciples shouted, his voice laced with disbelief and fear as he began to grasp the situation’s severity.
“Enough!†Luo Jinxiao cut him off, her voice steady and assertive. “You dare to accuse her while her hands are clean of innocent blood. If you truly seek a fight, then I’ll show you just how a deity protects what’s dear to her!â€
With a sweep of her arm, the frozen ground underfoot began to crack and splinter as her power surged forth, ready to confront any who dared to retaliate against Qu Weiyin. The atmosphere shimmered with energy as the disciples exchanged worried glances, reconsidering the wisdom of their aggressive stance against a being of her caliber.
“Step back, or face the consequences of your actions!†she warned. The once-confident expressions of her opponents faltered as they felt the raw power emanating from her form.
The world around them felt poised on the edge of battle, a stillness heavy with tension, as both parties awaited the unfolding clash. Would they press on with their quest for revenge against Qu Weiyin, or would they heed Luo Jinxiao’s warning and reconsider their motivations? The air crackled with uncertainty, marking the moment before the storm.
