Seeing this from behind, a flicker of malice crossed Yu Gui’s gray-white eyes as his hand slipped into his sleeve, seemingly preparing to retrieve something.
Luo Jinxiao was unaware of this when suddenly, a small, fierce figure appeared behind her. A torrent of turbulent energy surged forth, causing Yu Gui’s pupils to constrict. He found himself propelled backward, crashing against the wall.
He weakly coughed, spitting out a mouthful of blood, his pale skin contrasting violently, making him seem ghostly.
Both Luo Jinxiao and Qu Weiyin turned to the source of the commotion, and they saw Qiongqi, who had previously appeared dazed, now transformed back into his tiger form, baring his fangs and standing protectively in front of Luo Jinxiao with ferocious eyes.
Luo Jinxiao’s gaze darted to Yu Gui’s sleeve.
Yu Gui slowly reached up to wipe the blood from his mouth, staring in astonishment at Qiongqi, his expression one of utter shock.
“Qiongqi…” he murmured, then looked at Qu Weiyin again. A moment later, a hint of a smile emerged on his face.
However, as soon as his gaze fell back on Luo Jinxiao, that smile vanished.
Luo Jinxiao observed his every action and then glanced at Qu Weiyin. An inkling of understanding began to unfold within her, as if a hidden piece of a puzzle was finally falling into place.
Qu Weiyin reached out, and the object within Yu Gui’s sleeve suddenly shot up in the air, tracing an arc before landing in her palm. It was a small bone whistle that emanated a faint, cold light.
She gripped the bone whistle with one hand, and when she raised her eyes again, her expression was decidedly unfriendly.
“You should leave,” she stated firmly.
Luo Jinxiao understood that “you” referred to herself, but concern gnawed at her, and she instinctively tugged at Qu Weiyin’s sleeve, unwilling to let go.
Qu Weiyin rarely displayed patience; instead of chastising her, she spoke softly, “It’s fine. Don’t worry.”
She turned back, raising her hand to gently wipe the sweat from Luo Jinxiao’s forehead with her sleeve.
This action was tinged with a certain tenderness.
Luo Jinxiao felt a slight stirring in her heart, and her feet unconsciously moved toward the door. She obediently stepped outside, and by the time she realized what she was doing, she found herself standing outside, peering in through the paper window, where she could only see hazy shadows within.
She tried to poke a small hole in the door, but as soon as her finger reached out, it was forcefully rebounded by spiritual energy. Hugging her arms tightly, she felt quite wronged.
What secrets was Qu Weiyin hiding? If it were truly as she suspected, it would be far too unbelievable.
But looking at herself again, having traveled back two thousand years only to encounter someone with the same name and appearance as her—it was nothing short of magical.
—
Meanwhile, inside the room.
Qu Weiyin slowly approached Yu Gui, and the bone whistle in her hand instantly crumbled to powder. The closer she got, the more Yu Gui’s lips trembled. Eventually, he could no longer contain himself and exclaimed, “Who is she?”
“It has nothing to do with you,” Qu Weiyin replied indifferently.
“You are protecting her.” Yu Gui had nowhere left to retreat, pressing himself against the wall.
“Yes,” Qu Weiyin answered with unyielding confidence, her narrow eyes glancing at Yu Gui, entwining him in a web of danger and constraint.
Yu Gui suddenly let out a self-mocking cold laugh, gripping his robe tightly as he gritted his teeth. “If you remember my name, you must remember the past. But if you remember the past, you cannot simply forget the hatred!”
Qu Weiyin’s eyes flickered slightly. After a moment of pause, she replied, “I have not forgotten; how could I forget such a deep-rooted hatred?”
“Then why do you protect such a yellow-haired girl? What makes her so special that you would compromise to this extent?” Yu Gui’s face grew somewhat hideous as he spoke through clenched teeth, stabilizing himself against the wall. “Are you willing to abandon our entire demon clan for her?”
Upon hearing this, Qu Weiyin gently rubbed her fingertips together, after a long pause, she seemed to reach a firm decision and nodded.
“What a joke!” Yu Gui’s voice rose, seemingly unable to believe what Qu Weiyin had just said. “You once declared that you would never allow yourself to develop feelings for anyone. You said that dragons have their reverse scales; touch them and you will be harmed. Have you forgotten, Demon Lord?” Each word felt like he was trying to shatter the very notion of their implications.
Qu Weiyin hadn’t heard that title in so long; suddenly hearing it stirred a sense of temporal dislocation within her.
“I’ve not brought anything to the demon realm. In this lifetime, I am not here, and you will have a more powerful Demon Lord than I,” Qu Weiyin said, slightly closing her eyes. She had long since ceased to be tied to this matter, yet Yu Gui’s words reignited the sense of struggle in her heart.
Memories from her past life surged vividly in her mind.
“You can’t! How can you compromise with the Immortal Path? Have you truly forgotten how they treated you? Demon Lord, I’ve searched for you for so long, yet in this broken body, I couldn’t escape. Now that I’ve finally found you, you haven’t forgotten the past either; this is such a great opportunity…”
“No, it’s different now,” Qu Weiyin frowned deeply, her expression pained.
“Is it because of her? Just because of a yellow-haired girl? Can she really change your mind, and all of you to this extent?” Yu Gui’s demeanor appeared somewhat deranged as he pointed at Qiongqi, tears cascading from his clear eyes, gliding down his almost translucent skin.
“You remember, don’t you?” Yu Gui shouted, and Qiongqi bared his sharp teeth even more, digging his claws into the ground and emitting a low growl.
Qu Weiyin glanced at Qiongqi in surprise, not having considered that he might also remember their past life.
Qiongqi did not look at Qu Weiyin; he seemed to carry an air of estrangement towards her. Suddenly, she understood the subtle distance and animosity that had been felt upon their first meeting—because in the previous life, she had only regarded him as a mount.
A wave of guilt flooded her heart.
Tears streamed down Yu Gui’s face, his eyes filled with sorrow and desperation. Clenching his teeth, he said, “If that girl dies, will the Demon Lord return? I will serve you as I did in the past life. I am your only confidant; together, we can reclaim the demon realm and eliminate those who have insulted you and opposed you, leaving no trace behind.”
Qu Weiyin’s expression suddenly shifted, her gaze turning cold and hard. She stepped forward and grabbed his collar, speaking in a chilling voice, “I can’t go back. I won’t harm you, but if you lay a finger on her, I will make sure you regret it deeply.”
“We are not confidants. I, Qu Weiyin, have never had a confidant.” Her attitude was as frigid as the deepest winter.
“She is now your taboo. You cannot touch her,” Qu Weiyin insisted.
Yu Gui seemed to weaken, and when Qu Weiyin released her grip, he slid down against the wall and collapsed onto the floor.
“Where are the No Regrets Sect members?” Qu Weiyin asked coldly.
After a long silence, Yu Gui finally spoke, “After I fought with them, the demon realm’s people took them away.”
“And harming the populace? Is that also your doing?”
“That was Ah Qiu; he is practicing the Shadow Array. He needs people as sacrifices.”
“He has also been reborn?” Qu Weiyin’s brow furrowed deeper.
“No, I found him and handed over the Shadow Array to him. If you had permitted us to cultivate the Shadow Array in your previous life, we wouldn’t have been completely exterminated by those righteous sects,” Yu Gui said through gritted teeth.
Qu Weiyin tightened her fist but ultimately did not utter a word. She silently nodded, turning to exit, nearly colliding with Luo Jinxiao, who was leaning against the door.
“Master Uncle!” Luo Jinxiao exclaimed with relief upon seeing her emerge. She stepped forward to grab Qu Weiyin’s arm, tilting her head back to check her eyes for any redness.
Qu Weiyin frowned and irritatedly swatted her hand away, casually giving her a light smack on the head.
“Don’t touch me like that.”
Rubbing her head, Luo Jinxiao peered into the room. “I was so worried! What if Master Uncle fell under his influence again? Shouldn’t we tie him up?â€
A trace of reluctance crossed Qu Weiyin’s eyes. After a moment’s hesitation, she ultimately considered their past feelings and said, “No need.”
“Alright, I’ll obey Master Uncle then,” Luo Jinxiao smiled, her dimples deepening.
Inside the room, Qiongqi stole a few glances at Yu Gui. When Yu Gui reached out to touch her high, curled tail, she deftly dodged away.
“You too, in the last life—I raised you,” Yu Gui said with a bitter smile.
Qiongqi’s round eyes drooped, then she bounded out of the door, circling around Luo Jinxiao’s legs like a giant golden cat, nudging against her while letting out soft hums.
She seemed to be in a bad mood.
Luo Jinxiao looked at her, her gaze flickering as she gently smiled and bent down with difficulty to lift Qiongqi into her arms, standing awkwardly like she was holding a hefty pig.
“You’re so heavy! Master Uncle, where are we going?” she asked, lifting her gaze.
“To the demon realm,†Qu Weiyin replied, glancing at Qiongqi. She thought to herself that seeing her like this was somewhat better than her human form; at least she wasn’t being annoyingly clingy, which was rather bothersome.
Qiongqi reached out her tongue and licked Luo Jinxiao’s nose.
Qu Weiyin frowned again, still feeling irritated.
She turned and strode down the stairs, with Luo Jinxiao hurrying to keep up. However, as they passed the staircase, she glanced back at the door one last time, where Yu Gui was being helped up by the rabbit demon he called Yao Yao.
Their eyes met; Yu Gui’s gaze was deep, hiding emotions that were hard to discern, yet it sent a chill down Luo Jinxiao’s spine.
Luo Jinxiao refused to back down; she surveyed him from head to toe, dropping her smile as her thoughts churned. The tension between them was palpable.
Once they finally exited the Aroma Pavilion, Luo Jinxiao shook off her earlier seriousness and walked ahead of Qu Weiyin, bending down to scrutinize her face.
“Master Uncle, is the demon realm far from here?”
“Not far.”
The entrance to the demon realm was something most people were unaware of. Luo Jinxiao had never heard about it before, only knowing that it was heavily guarded and that no one from outside the realm could enter. This was also the reason why, despite the demon realm being at a disadvantage over the years, it had never fallen into decline.
She suppressed her emotions and decided that if Qu Weiyin did not wish to share, she would not pry.
So she smiled brightly and said, “Master Uncle, now that we know where they are, can you feel a little happier?”
Qu Weiyin, exasperated, pushed Luo Jinxiao away from her. “You’re being noisy.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Luo Jinxiao suddenly stretched her arms wide and rushed past her, wrapping her arms around Qu Weiyin tightly.
The force she used was a bit too strong, causing Qu Weiyin’s chin to bump against her shoulder. The pressure of her slender bones made Qu Weiyin frown slightly, but she did not pull away.
She wasn’t sure if it was because she was momentarily stunned or if, deep down, she didn’t want to shy away.
“What are you doing?” Qu Weiyin feigned indifference, but her hands had already clenched tightly. Luo Jinxiao’s touch sent waves of tingling sensations coursing through her.
Luo Jinxiao didn’t really understand why she did this. She simply felt that the best way to comfort someone was through a hug, just as she had done previously in the Heavenly Realm.
“Master Uncle, no matter what happens, I will always be by your side. You are, and always will be, the best person I have ever met,” Luo Jinxiao whispered softly.
If her suspicions were true, she should have kept her distance, considering she was truly the Demon Lord capable of inciting chaos across the Six Realms.
But now, she thought that even if Qu Weiyin was a demon, there must be more to the story. How could someone so kind recklessly take lives?
Perhaps it was naive, but she didn’t feel that being naive was wrong.
Qu Weiyin let out a soft hum, remaining silent. To her surprise, she began to wish the embrace could last a little longer. The cool breeze wafted around them, but the warmth of the girl’s touch was undeniable.
This peculiar blend of heat and dizziness was quite enchanting.
However, the embrace soon came to an end. Luo Jinxiao stepped back with a flushed face, scratching her head awkwardly. “Let’s go, Master Uncle.”
