Qu Chengzhou’s complexion shifted from green to purple, and he remained silent, his gaze toward Qu Weiyin filled with hatred. Qu Weiyin, unwavering, met his gaze with equal intensity, their spotlight charged with an undercurrent of tension.
“Please understand, everyone, that No Regrets Mountain has more than just the No Regrets Palace. There’s another grand hall underground, known only to Qu Chengzhou,†Elder Liu declared.
“Thus, for a long time, he has been using living beings for his cultivation, resulting in a rapid increase in his power,†Elder Liu continued, now glancing at Qu Weiyin.
“Eventually, he grew dissatisfied with simple methods of cultivation and obtained some form of heretical art from somewhere, using lives as sacrifices. If the sacrifices possessed spiritual energy, his cultivation would be accelerated even further. Consequently, he began to kill fellow disciples. Now, he even wants to frame this matter on Qu Weiyin to clear himself of blame.â€
“If I’m guessing correctly, he has completed the wicked art he cultivated. From today onward, he wishes to wash his hands of this dirty business. Huai Shan and Huai Yu, why did you two cooperate with him in lying?†Elder Liu’s voice rose suddenly, causing Huai Shan and Huai Yu to drop to their knees in terror.
They trembled, their expressions filled with fear, and Huai Yu broke down into sobs.
“Elder Liu, we were coerced by Elder Qu! He threatened us, saying if we didn’t say this, he would take our lives. We were scared…â€
“Scared? Master Uncle nearly risked her life to save you both because you were fellow disciples! And you simply throw her away because of a little fear?†Luo Jinxiao could no longer contain her anger, shouting from the side.
“Elder Qu, do you have anything more to say?†It was Qu Weiyin who spoke this time, her voice calm, though her fingertips trembled with the intensity of her hatred.
Qu Chengzhou suddenly revealed a smile, saying nothing in response.
“Is the evidence so solid that no one dares to move?†Elder Liu frowned as he looked back at the crowd, which had previously appeared righteous.
Finally, a few hesitant individuals stepped forward, surrounding and taking Qu Chengzhou away.
No one had anticipated that the renowned Qu Chengzhou in the martial world would be the prime suspect behind the consecutive disappearances within No Regrets Sect, and no one dared to think that he would actually use his own disciples as bait to cultivate heretical arts.
The news quickly spread outside the sect, with some in disbelief while others were angered, a commotion erupting among them.
Some sect leaders were outraged, while a few others took the opportunity to watch the spectacle unfold, relishing in the disgrace that had befallen the leading sect of No Regrets.
The situation would ultimately be managed by other elders, and Qu Chengzhou was soon escorted to the Lièyáng Hall, where demons and monsters were imprisoned, to await discussions among the various sects.
Although shameful family matters should not be aired publicly, it was the custom of the martial world that once demons were involved, it was essential for everyone to convene and deliberate on how to address the issue.
As Qu Chengzhou was being led out, he shot a fierce glare at Qu Weiyin before exiting with a cold smile.
Qu Weiyin seemed lost in thought, her gaze distant, and upon seeing this expression, Luo Jinxiao felt an inexplicable wave of worry wash over her.
“Master Uncle,†she called out, rushing to stand in front of her.
“Did you already know what he was doing?†Luo Jinxiao asked, gripping the hem of her clothing.
Qu Weiyin snapped out of her reverie, giving a slight nod before frowning. “I haven’t yet asked you where you got that evidence. Have you been to his underground palace?â€
Realizing she couldn’t hide it, Luo Jinxiao was unable to meet Qu Weiyin’s eyes, her head lowered in guilt.
“How did you get there?†Qu Weiyin pressed on relentlessly.
Elder Liu stepped forward, intending to speak with Qu Weiyin, but she raised her hand to block him. “Elder Liu, you can manage this for now; I have something to discuss with her.â€
Without further ado, she grabbed Luo Jinxiao’s arm, and the two of them instantly vanished from the grand hall, leaving the chaotic events behind them.
Qu Weiyin kept a firm grip on Luo Jinxiao’s arm, pressing her skin painfully, causing her discomfort. When Luo Jinxiao opened her eyes again, she found herself in Qu Weiyin’s Cold Cloud Pavilion.
Qu Weiyin released her grip and stared directly into her eyes, her gaze deep and inscrutable, devoid of clear emotion. She stated flatly, “I want to know: how did you get there?â€
“I… I was captured,†Luo Jinxiao stammered, her heart racing as she instinctively took a step back.
“I gave you the Spirit Jade. If you can’t escape, why didn’t you call for me?†Qu Weiyin pressed, her pupils dilating slightly. “Were you doing this on purpose?â€
Luo Jinxiao was rendered speechless.
Qu Weiyin inhaled deeply, seemingly suppressing her anger, and advanced toward Luo Jinxiao, cornering her against the wall.
“What were you thinking? It was just a misunderstanding! Is your life truly worth so little that you’d risk everything for it?†Qu Weiyin’s voice rose sharply, causing her own eyes to redden.
Looking up at Luo Jinxiao, a sudden pang of sorrow swept over her heart.
“I’m not worth it,†Luo Jinxiao slowly replied, then turned her back, creating distance between them.
“I’ve long been aware of Qu Chengzhou’s scheme. I didn’t show myself these past few days to locate where he was hiding. Only after I gathered some leads did I have Elder Liu break into the underground palace and then hurried back to No Regrets Sect,†Qu Weiyin forced herself to keep her emotions in check.
If it had been her in the previous life, she would not have been able to discover what Qu Chengzhou was doing. However, after living several thousand years, she had grown savvier.
She had calculated everything, waiting for the right moment. Never did she expect that someone else had done the same, even taking greater risks.
“You’re worth it,†Luo Jinxiao suddenly spoke up, her eyelids lowered as she approached Qu Weiyin, her hands nervously twisting the hem of her clothes.
“Consider it a futile act on my part, but I do not regret it. Master Uncle, even though my cultivation is low and my abilities are weak, as long as there’s even a slight chance, I’ll do everything in my power to protect you.â€
“In the future, I won’t hide anything from you. Please don’t be mad…†Luo Jinxiao pleaded, tugging at her sleeve, but Qu Weiyin pulled away without a word.
“Master Uncle…†Luo Jinxiao knelt and tilted her head up, gently nudging Qu Weiyin’s arm with her shoulder in an attempt to calm her temper.
Qu Weiyin’s stern expression quickly began to soften, and she reached out and ruffled Luo Jinxiao’s hair.
“From now on, you mustn’t keep anything from me or put yourself in danger for my sake,†Qu Weiyin replied through clenched teeth, her anger dissipating, but her tone becoming noticeably gentler.
“Alright!†Luo Jinxiao beamed, raising her hand to swear, “I, Luo Jinxiao, vow to the heavens that I will no longer risk my life or hide anything from my Master Uncle!â€
Qu Weiyin responded with a soft grunt, her gaze shifting awkwardly to the side as a faint blush colored her fair cheeks.
“What a smooth talker,†she muttered angrily.
Qu Weiyin sighed, then pulled Luo Jinxiao close, pressing her down onto the bed. Raising her hand, she began to channel her energy.
“What is Master Uncle doing?†Luo Jinxiao asked uneasily.
“Let’s see if you’re foolish enough to get injured. Qu Chengzhou cultivates the Mingzhen Diagram, the same technique as that person we encountered in the Demon Realm. Now I suspect he’s not only practicing heretical arts but is also colluding with the demon race,†Qu Weiyin explained.
“The Mingzhen Diagram is an ancient method. Once mastered, it can rival even the combined might of experts from various sects. The fact that you managed to escape from him and are standing here alive is already a significant stroke of luck.â€
In her previous life, Qu Weiyin had never dabbled in such wicked paths; she had been able to disturb the righteous sects just by reaching the Great Ascension stage. And now, with the emergence of the Mingzhen Diagram, the ability to cultivate two individuals meant there might not be any peace left in the world.
Her brow furrowed as she examined Luo Jinxiao’s celestial veins with a look of astonishment, casting her gaze inquiringly at Luo Jinxiao.
Luo Jinxiao, having just promised not to hide anything, felt compelled to answer honestly. “I escaped from the underground palace and then encountered a white-clad celestial maiden. I fainted, and the celestial maiden saved me. When I woke up, I was fine.â€
She delivered this string of information in one breath, leaving Qu Weiyin utterly confused. However, she keenly picked up on the mention of the “white-clad celestial maiden.â€
“What white-clad celestial maiden?†Qu Weiyin’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, causing Luo Jinxiao to break out in a thin sheen of sweat along her back.
“I don’t know,†Luo Jinxiao shook her head in response.
Qu Weiyin studied her for a moment before turning to leave. Thinking she was upset, Luo Jinxiao hurriedly reached out to grab her, but in doing so, her hand accidentally caught Qu Weiyin’s.
Both froze, and Qu Weiyin reacted more strongly, quickly pulling her hand back and turning her back to Luo Jinxiao, refusing to look at her. She remarked coolly, “What are you thinking? I’m not angry. I’ll go get you some elixirs. Even if someone has helped heal your injuries, you should still consume something to nourish your celestial veins.â€
She swallowed lightly, feeling her throat grow dry.
Luo Jinxiao withdrew her hand, staring blankly at her palm. Qu Weiyin’s hand was astonishingly soft; after having touched it, she felt the urge to squeeze it again.
Immediately, she lowered her head, feeling ashamed. What was she thinking?
Qu Weiyin returned with the elixir and handed it to Luo Jinxiao. Then, she produced a cup of the cloud mist tea Luo Jinxiao favored and held it to her lips. Luo Jinxiao instinctively reached out to take it, but Qu Weiyin pulled it back.
“Just drink,†Qu Weiyin instructed, gently holding the teacup and feeding it to Luo Jinxiao.
Luo Jinxiao felt overwhelmed; the tea was delicious, refreshing, and aromatic, almost addictive.
“The white-clad maiden you encountered might have been our sect leader,†Qu Weiyin remarked.
Luo Jinxiao nearly choked on her tea. She coughed, her eyes glimmering with disbelief. “Didn’t everyone say the sect leader had long since passed away?â€
“No one has actually witnessed this; it’s all speculation. When I looked at your celestial veins earlier, there was not a trace of injury. That level of healing prowess can only belong to the sect leader,†Qu Weiyin explained.
Upon hearing this, Luo Jinxiao reviewed her memories of the woman she met and felt that Qu Weiyin’s deduction made perfect sense.
After finishing the elixir, Luo Jinxiao suddenly seemed to remember something. She jumped up, startling Qu Weiyin, who nearly collided with her.
Luo Jinxiao’s cheek brushed closely past Qu Weiyin’s nose, bringing with it a wave of warmth.
“What are you doing?†Qu Weiyin reprimanded softly.
Luo Jinxiao felt embarrassed and scratched her head with a silly grin. She stepped closer and grabbed Qu Weiyin’s arm, smiling softly. “Master Uncle, about the question you asked me yesterday, I thought about it last night and came to a conclusion.â€
“Even if you truly become a demon, I will never stand against you. There are plenty of bad people in this world, and the righteous sects aren’t entirely blameless. If someone like you were to turn to the dark side, it would surely be someone else’s fault.â€
“I’m willing to go against anyone who opposes you, for your sake,†Luo Jinxiao declared earnestly.
Qu Weiyin was taken aback by her words. She stared at Luo Jinxiao’s bright, clear eyes, and as she looked, that brilliance began to blur into a haze.
“You’re still too young, and the days ahead of you are long. Why say such things?â€
It was partly her fault—she shouldn’t stir up trouble for her own selfish reasons. Knowing full well how innocent Luo Jinxiao was, yet still asking her such heavy questions, she couldn’t help but feel as if she had regressed despite having lived for several thousand years.
Luo Jinxiao was waiting for Qu Weiyin to respond when suddenly she noticed a moisture gathering in Qu Weiyin’s eyes. After a moment, a tear, as big as a bean, slipped down her smooth white cheek, falling to the ground.
Qu Weiyin, surprisingly, was crying in front of her.
