Qiongqi instinctively moved to protect Luo Jinxiao, lifting its leg as if to bite at the man’s neck. Luo Jinxiao quickly pressed her hand down on Qiongqi’s head and exchanged a knowing wink with it.
“Move!†the man shouted again, forcefully dragging her outside. Luo Jinxiao found the situation amusing and made no effort to resist as she followed him out.
“Tang, Tang Young Sect Master! I advise you to be reasonable and hand over the invitation card you stole from us!†the man demanded as they stepped into the street.
Hearing his words, Luo Jinxiao’s expression turned to one of surprise. Leading the White Moon Sect was none other than Tang Lan’er! Even after five years, she showed no significant change; her features were still exquisite, and the layers of golden-threaded jade pieces at her waist accentuated her slim figure, radiating an air of nobility.
Tang Lan’er, wielding her sword, angrily pointed at them and said, “Does the Life and Death Sect have no shame? If you can’t defeat me, do you resort to threatening innocent people? Haven’t you realized how tarnished your reputation in the martial world has become over the past few years?â€
“So what? I won’t kill her, but if you refuse to hand over the invitation, I’ll shave off all her hair! Can you bear to watch her lovely dark hair be destroyed?” the man replied as he pressed the blade against Luo Jinxiao’s neck.
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t believe he meant that and nearly rolled her eyes in exasperation.
“The treasure exchange has started, hurry up!†the man insisted.
“It was the agreement of the Celestial Alliance to confiscate your invitation cards to prevent you from entering. I absolutely cannot return it to you!†Tang Lan’er shot back angrily.
Seeing her attitude, the man became enraged. With a swift swing, he aimed to intimidate her, but before he could act, the previously motionless woman in black suddenly raised her hand and snapped her fingers at the knife in his grasp.
In that instant of distraction, the blade transformed into iron powder, cascading to the ground.
Tang Lan’er seized the moment, stepping forward to pull Luo Jinxiao behind her while brandishing her sword. The remaining disciples from the Life and Death Sect surged forward as both sides were pulled into a chaotic melee, fighting fiercely.
Luo Jinxiao took a step back, brushing off her sleeves as she watched the chaos from a safe distance. She caught someone who was running slower, tilted her head, and asked, “This fellow cultivator, may I inquire if it’s absolutely necessary to have an invitation to enter the treasure exchange?â€
The disciple from the White Moon Sect ceased fighting and stood chatting with Luo Jinxiao. “That’s right. In previous years, anyone could enter freely, but there are always those who cause trouble when they can’t get their hands on a treasure. This year, they’ve wised up and only released a limited number of invitation cards. Any sect that has caused disturbances in the past or lacks celestial lineage is forbidden from entering.â€
Luo Jinxiao nodded, internally noting that without an invitation, she wouldn’t be able to enter and that made her chances of finding her Master Uncle much slimmer.
She glanced at Tang Lan’er, who was currently engaged in combat, and her thoughts stirred. She turned back to the White Moon Sect disciple and asked, “Does your Young Sect Master have any spare invitation cards? She’s a Young Sect Master; surely she can take someone in.â€
“Well, she might be able to, but the Young Sect Master can be quite willful and difficult to negotiate with,†the disciple replied with a shake of his head.
After contemplating for a moment, Luo Jinxiao suddenly moved, appearing behind one of the black-clad fighters who was battling Tang Lan’er. Crossing her arms, she merely glanced at the man, and instantly, fine frost coated his body, rendering him immobile; his spirit sword clattered to the ground.
Tang Lan’er, in the midst of her fight, was taken aback to see her opponent freeze and collapse. When her gaze met the emerald eyes of the black-clad woman, they were deep and clear.
“I’ll help you deal with them; you take me inside, how does that sound?†Luo Jinxiao proposed, her voice melodious and tinged with a sense of familiarity.
Before Tang Lan’er could process what was happening, the black-clad woman moved with an untraceable speed, and by the time she returned to face her again, the disciples of the Life and Death Sect were sprawled all over the ground.
Tang Lan’er’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You’re also a cultivator! Who are you?â€
“Let’s just say I’m not a bad person. I dealt with those guys for you. So, will you take me in?†Luo Jinxiao replied, leaning forward slightly, tilting her chin toward Tang Lan’er.
Just then, Tang Lan’er took a step back, biting her lip. “I can take you in, but first, let me see your face. Otherwise, who knows if you’re human or a ghost?â€
Luo Jinxiao chuckled, pointing to her own shadow. “In broad daylight, am I supposed to come from the Underworld?â€
Tang Lan’er felt that Luo Jinxiao looked incredibly familiar yet strikingly different, so she hesitated to recognize her. As Luo Jinxiao was distracted, Tang Lan’er swiftly reached out to snatch her veil, but Luo Jinxiao easily dodged.
Tang Lan’er missed her target and flushed with anger, trying again. Luo Jinxiao, not wanting to waste time, seized her wrist and removed the veil herself. With a sigh, she said, “Now you can see. But remember to fulfill your promise after.â€
With the black veil removed, the first thing revealed was her high nose bridge and delicate pink lips. Over the past five years on the mountain, her complexion had lightened even more; her skin was as fragile as if it could burst at any moment, and under the sunlight, it even radiated a soft glow.
Her almond-shaped eyes gazed at Tang Lan’er, initially appearing adorable and refined. Yet paired with her sharp gaze, they unexpectedly exuded an air of chilliness. Her dark pupils were like deep pools, seemingly capable of capturing the soul.
Tang Lan’er froze, not even realizing that Luo Jinxiao had already released her hand.
“Luo Jinxiao??†she exclaimed, her voice loud.
“Shh, keep it down,†Luo Jinxiao warned, raising a finger to her lips.
Tang Lan’er lowered her voice and reached out to touch Luo Jinxiao’s arm, confirming that it was warm. Only then did she say, “You—you’re not dead? Everyone said you perished at the hands of the demon race five years ago! I even burned paper for you. How are you alive again?â€
“Really? People are saying I’m dead?†Luo Jinxiao was genuinely surprised to hear that for the first time.
Tang Lan’er’s expression was a mix of shock and joy. She spun around, grabbing Luo Jinxiao’s sleeve as she pulled her through the crowd, bombarding her with questions about where she had been for the past five years.
Luo Jinxiao remained silent, offering perfunctory responses while casting her gaze around, hoping to spot Qu Weiyin.
“Hey, why aren’t you talking?†Tang Lan’er tugged at her, visibly irritated.
“Shh, hand me two invitation cards,†Luo Jinxiao replied, extending her hand.
Pouting, Tang Lan’er let out a small ‘oh’ as she took out the invitation cards and handed them to Luo Jinxiao. Luo Jinxiao passed one to Qiongqi, who, clutching the card, grinned and leaned toward her.
Tang Lan’er pulled Qiongqi away with one hand, looking up at Luo Jinxiao curiously. “Who is she?â€
“My daughter,†Luo Jinxiao replied dismissively as she tugged Qiongqi into the venue.
“Your daughter? When did you give birth?†Tang Lan’er, still reeling from the day’s shocks, quickened her pace to catch up.
Inside the treasure exchange arena, it was a sea of people. Since Luo Jinxiao and Tang Lan’er had arrived late, they could only find seats on the periphery. The venue itself was quite expansive, with the central circular stage measuring at least several dozen yards in width.
Luo Jinxiao didn’t want to attract attention, so she put her veil back on, but her eyes continued to scan the crowd. She recognized several familiar faces, including Chi Yi, who sat upright with an air of propriety not far away.
Luo Jinxiao chuckled softly, feeling as though these five years had merely flown by in an instant, a mere flick of the fingers in the grand scheme of things.
