Inside the room, the lights were extinguished, and no glow seeped through the cracks of the door. The hallway was enveloped in darkness and silence, occasionally broken by the loud snores of neighboring guests.
She must be asleep, Luo Jinxiao sighed, catching a whiff of the alcohol on her clothes. She prepared to head back to her own room to take a bath.
Just as she turned around, a sudden loud noise erupted from inside, as if something heavy had fallen. Startled, she froze and quickly turned back to knock on Qu Weiyin’s door.
“Master Uncle? Master Uncle!†she called twice, but there was still no response. Growing anxious, she slapped her palm against the door, her spiritual energy severing the latch. The wooden door creaked open wide.
Entering the room, she saw Qu Weiyin lying on the bed in the moonlight, one hand propping her head, her brow tightly furrowed as if she were trapped in a nightmare. The object that had fallen was the Moonlight Star Sword, and the sword spirit was sprawled on the floor, rubbing its bottom.
Luo Jinxiao let out a sigh of relief. She closed the door quietly and tiptoed to Qu Weiyin’s bedside, intending to cover her with a blanket.
However, the sword spirit suddenly sprang up from the ground and attempted to bite Luo Jinxiao’s hand, leaving a mark of tiny teeth on her fair skin.
Luo Jinxiao winced and pulled her hand back. “Ouch! What was that for?â€
“Get out! You’re not welcome here,†the sword spirit exclaimed fiercely, despite its small stature.
“Is Master Uncle feeling unwell? She looks so pale,†Luo Jinxiao crouched down, observing Qu Weiyin’s face, before reaching out to touch her smooth forehead.
She didn’t seem sick at all.
“If you truly care about her, then stay away! You’ll only add to her worries,†the sword spirit said with disdain, clearly unhappy with Luo Jinxiao.
Ignoring the sword spirit, Luo Jinxiao had been startled by the earlier commotion, and the last remnants of her intoxication faded instantly, leaving her more clear-headed.
She reached out, channeling her silver and white spiritual energy into Qu Weiyin’s body to investigate.
The celestial meridian was strong, and her spiritual energy abundant, but amidst it all, dark energy swirled, consistently clashing with the spiritual power, vying for dominance. Though Qu Weiyin was formidable, the dark energy was gradually growing stronger, and it wouldn’t be long before it contended against her spiritual energy.
Suddenly, the dark energy surged, causing Qu Weiyin’s delicate brows to furrow tightly, forming a frown that resembled a river. In a whisper of pain, her jade-like body curled up, hugging her arms as if seeking safety like a child.
Seeing her in agony twisted Luo Jinxiao’s heart, and she felt an unbearable ache. She turned her palm over and withdrew her spiritual energy while trying to absorb the dark energy into herself.
“Hey, hey! Are you crazy? That’s dark energy!” the sword spirit exclaimed in alarm, attempting to block Luo Jinxiao’s approach. But even before it could get close, it heard a soft groan escape Luo Jinxiao. Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her chest, nearly causing her to spit blood.
In an instant, she went from crouching to kneeling, supporting herself against the bed’s edge.
The dark energy was indeed formidable; not only could she not extract it, but she nearly ruptured her heart and lungs in the process.
“Two lunatics,†the sword spirit said, momentarily stunned before scolding them.
Once Luo Jinxiao regained her composure, she turned her face to ask, “How long has she been like this?â€
“Since she killed that old man Qu, it’s been nearly every night. Either she can’t sleep at all, or if she does, she falls into a deep coma, only to wake up normally the next morning.â€
“Alright, alright, just go away. I really can’t stand your presence,†the sword spirit grumbled while tugging at the flesh on Luo Jinxiao’s arm, trying to drag her toward the door.
Caught off guard, Luo Jinxiao stumbled back a few steps. Just then, Qu Weiyin suddenly turned over in bed and murmured, “Luo Jinxiao…â€
Upon hearing her name, Luo Jinxiao halted, pushed the sword spirit aside, and returned to Qu Weiyin’s bedside.
Qu Weiyin’s delicate fingers flailed in the air, and when Luo Jinxiao reached out, Qu Weiyin grasped her hand tightly, halting her restless movements in sleep.
“Please don’t die,†Qu Weiyin suddenly said, her tone filled with sorrow. Her lashes quivered as she bit down on her crimson lip, and her hair fell tousled on her forehead, making her look stunningly beautiful.
“I’m not dead; I’m here,†Luo Jinxiao replied, feeling a pang of heartache but unsure of how to help.
Was she dreaming of something frightening? The formidable Demon Lord was frightened to such an extent.
Having heard Luo Jinxiao’s voice in her dreams, Qu Weiyin calmed down, curling up tightly once again. Her slender waist and jade-like shoulders were accentuated by her red dress, making her appear delicate and graceful.
In such a vulnerable state, she clutched Luo Jinxiao’s sleeve tightly while lying on the bed.
Qu Weiyin seemed to be half-awake, her eyes slightly open but unfocused, lingering in a foggy haze. The dark energy surrounding her seemed to crawl around her body like black worms.
Luo Jinxiao watched this with concern and urgency in her heart.
She wanted to go pour Qu Weiyin a cup of cloud and mist tea, but just as she got up, she felt Qu Weiyin’s powerful arms wrap around her waist from behind, pulling her back a few steps until she stumbled and fell onto the bed.
The sword spirit let out a yelp, quickly covering its eyes with its small hands. “Master Uncle!â€
Luo Jinxiao was suddenly enveloped by Qu Weiyin’s warm embrace, and she quickly whispered, her cheeks flushing from her ears to the back of her neck.
Qu Weiyin’s body was undeniably beautiful—soft, enchanting, and gracefully curvaceous. Being held so tightly left Luo Jinxiao with no strength to resist.
Qu Weiyin hugged her like a jade pillow, devoid of any romantic intent, but for Luo Jinxiao, she stood frozen in place, unable to move.
The alcohol she had previously consumed surged through her head at that moment. She felt as if her brain was divided—half was Qu Weiyin, and the other half was the liquor; shaking them together created a beautiful, muddled mix.
“Stay with me,†Qu Weiyin said softly.
Her voice was hoarse and alluring, like the most intoxicating drug, impossible to escape from.
Suddenly, Qu Weiyin pushed Luo Jinxiao down onto the bed, leaning forward to hover over her. Struggling to open her eyes, she seemed to be trying to see Luo Jinxiao’s face clearly. Ultimately, she gave up and reached out her smooth fingertip to poke at Luo Jinxiao’s lips.
The sword spirit, peeking through the fingers, was even more flustered. Muttering about the “absurdity†of the situation, it hurriedly covered its face and scrambled away, diving into the Moonlight Star Sword and refusing to come out.
Luo Jinxiao tensed up, her lips pressed tightly together, reluctant to speak.
Suddenly, she felt a wave of heat wash over her. She didn’t know whether it was from seeing Qu Weiyin in this state that made her shy or if it was the sweltering temperature in the room.
Qu Weiyin pressed down on Luo Jinxiao, her voice soft, barely discernible, and laced with a sweet timbre as she whispered, “Scared.â€
Just when Luo Jinxiao thought she was about to engage in something romantic, Qu Weiyin suddenly relaxed, burying her head in the crook of Luo Jinxiao’s neck, her delicate breaths mingling with the warm air.
With that, Luo Jinxiao finally allowed herself to relax, raising a hand to find her forehead slick with sweat.
This time, Qu Weiyin had finally escaped the nightmare, the dark energy no longer surrounding her, now sleeping deeply, yet her hand still tightly gripped the sleeve of Luo Jinxiao’s garment, resisting any attempt to pull away.
Luo Jinxiao was afraid to wake her, so she refrained from using force and ultimately lay back down, trying to calm her own wild heartbeat.
Qu Weiyin’s body, now in a peaceful slumber, was surprisingly soft. The strands of her hair brushed against her face in the gentle breeze, adding a ticklish sensation.
Luo Jinxiao still didn’t dare to move. All she had to do was slightly turn her head to see Qu Weiyin’s lips, rosy and fresh like ripe fruit, exhaling soft breaths that felt fragrant and enchanting.
Luo Jinxiao let out a soft sigh, her thoughts in disarray. Outside, the moonlight had disappeared, and she did not know when, but she also dozed off.
The next morning, the early light, tinged with rosy dawn, illuminated the small room, causing dust particles to swirl in the beams of light.
Qu Weiyin opened her eyes, first seeing a blur before her sight gradually cleared.
Suddenly feeling something was amiss, she propped herself up with her hands and was met with the sight of Luo Jinxiao’s sleeping face. She nearly gasped in surprise, but quickly transformed into a wisp of light, landing on the floor and stepping back until her back hit the door.
Astonished, she stared at Luo Jinxiao, frozen in place.
Luo Jinxiao was a light sleeper and was naturally awakened by the commotion. She quickly sprang up like a startled fish, eager to explain herself to Qu Weiyin but was stopped when Qu Weiyin raised her hand to create a barrier between them.
“What are you doing here?†Qu Weiyin asked, her eyes wide with surprise, her hands clenched tightly behind her back.
“I…I was just worried something would happen to you, so I came in last night. I promise, I had no ulterior motives!†Luo Jinxiao raised her hands defensively, stammering.
“Then why are you… in my bed?†Qu Weiyin’s expression turned frantic as she glanced at the messy bed, forcing herself to calm down and not overthink the situation.
“Last night, you wouldn’t let me leave! I didn’t stay here against my will,†Luo Jinxiao exclaimed, for the first time feeling how difficult it was to explain herself. She offered a wry smile.
Qu Weiyin’s face drained of color at these words, her voice tense as she gritted her teeth. “Nonsense! How could I possibly be so indiscreet?â€
Seeing that she couldn’t explain herself any further, Luo Jinxiao felt like crying without tears. She spread her hands in defeat. “Master Uncle, think about what dream you had last night, do you remember anything? You must have been in a nightmare, mistaking your dreams for reality.â€
Qu Weiyin’s bright phoenix eyes drooped, and her expression suddenly grew awkward.
Luo Jinxiao tilted her head to observe her expression and suddenly burst into laughter, her thin lips curling into a crescent smile. “Master Uncle called for me all night. You can’t possibly have dreamed of…â€
Before she could finish, Qu Weiyin covered her mouth with a frustrated glare. “Shut up! If you keep going, I swear I’ll go back to Wuhui Sect right now and find the Sect Master to relay a message!â€
Luo Jinxiao promptly obeyed and closed her mouth, though a smile still lingered at the corners of her lips as she focused on Qu Weiyin’s damp, early-morning eyes.
Qu Weiyin felt a chill race down her spine under that gaze and quickly withdrew her elegant fingers, turning instead to grasp the Moonlight Star Sword.
“Enough. Where exactly are we headed? Has the Sect Master sent any news?†Qu Weiyin changed the subject, her tone regaining its usual calm detachment.
After all the commotion the day before, Luo Jinxiao had expressed everything that needed to be said, and she had come to terms with her thoughts. Hence, she wisely chose not to bring it up again, knowing there would always be time in the future.
Luo Jinxiao obediently retrieved the silk cloth. Upon examining it, she noticed that the sun-like design had transformed into a different shape.
Qu Weiyin studied the pattern for a moment before speaking, “Chang Li?â€
Chang Li was a vast and perpetually frigid region in the northwest, known for its constant blizzards and desolation. It was seldom visited by humans or animals, serving mainly as a place for the banishment and imprisonment of wrongdoers or demons.
Moreover, it was a favored location for many sect disciples to train. Though harsh, the area was filled with numerous demons, making it easy to acquire spirit herbs and stones to aid in cultivation.
However, Qu Weiyin was uncertain about the Sect Master’s intentions regarding their journey to Chang Li and what steps lay ahead.
But if they were fortunate, they might chance upon the tree demon. The relationship between the tree demon and Xiuer had been fraught with difficulties, and Luo Jinxiao often saw herself reflected in their struggles, yearning to lend a helping hand.
“Since it’s the Sect Master’s decision, then we shall go,†Qu Weiyin said decisively. She raised her hand to sheath the sword, and the previously disheveled strands of hair were magically lifted by a golden light, quickly arranged into a neat bun at her back, with some silky locks cascading down, shimmering like satin.
“Are you really accompanying me, Master Uncle?†Luo Jinxiao grinned, moving closer to Qu Weiyin, only to have Qu Weiyin tilt her head to avoid her.
“You think that just because your cultivation has improved, you can handle everything? If something goes wrong, you’ll still need me to save you. It’s just not worth the risk,†Qu Weiyin replied, still irked by the earlier incident, her tone far from friendly.
Qu Weiyin cast a glance at Luo Jinxiao, her red robe swirling as she confidently stepped out the door.
Understanding Qu Weiyin’s temperament, Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but chuckle despite the sternness. She stood there, gently touching her face, her almond-shaped eyes slightly curved as she smiled.
She leaped forward, bouncing to catch up with her. “So that means Master Uncle still wants to protect me, right?â€
“Get lost,†Qu Weiyin replied, her voice sharp.
But even with that response, a faint smile threatened the corners of her lips as she walked out, and Luo Jinxiao’s heart felt lightened by the exchange.
