Luo Jinxiao could not help but say, “Oh,†and stopped insisting.
Only then did Qu Weiyin slowly return to the bed. Luo Jinxiao bent down to support her shoulder and helped her lie down, removing her shoes.
Luo Jinxiao’s long hair brushed against Qu Weiyin’s arm, smooth and cool to the touch.
“You should go back and rest early,†Qu Weiyin said, closing her eyes.
Suddenly remembering Qu Weiyin often had night terrors, Luo Jinxiao felt a wave of concern wash over her. “Master Uncle, I’m not tired. Why don’t I keep you company tonight?â€
“That wouldn’t do,†Qu Weiyin shook her head firmly.
“Fine then,†Luo Jinxiao said reluctantly, but she couldn’t argue further. She carefully tucked the blanket around Qu Weiyin before finally turning to leave.
She didn’t notice that Qu Weiyin had opened her eyes behind her, intently watching her retreating figure.
The room fell silent once again, but Qu Weiyin found it impossible to sleep. She lay flat for a while, her mind still wide awake. She knew she should take a moment to reflect, yet over these days, she could not suppress her wild emotions.
Qu Weiyin, ah Qu Weiyin, what a waste these thousands of years have been. Even this little bit of concern feels unbearable.
For the first time, she felt so completely lost, unsure which choice would yield a good outcome and which might lead to irreversible disaster.
Once a person develops attachments, they become weak.
However, if Luo Jinxiao were to hear this, she would surely retort, always so optimistically carefree.
But after all, Qu Weiyin was the elder. There were things she had to consider that Luo Jinxiao might overlook.
Slowly, Qu Weiyin raised her hand, her delicate fingers dancing beneath the moonlight, casting shadows on the wall. With a gentle flick of her slender index finger, the candle flame was ignited, and another flick extinguished it.
In the dim, flickering light, she realized she had gradually slid back down onto her bed.
Meanwhile, Luo Jinxiao stood beneath the eaves, arms wide open. The Cold Cloud Pavilion extended over the cliff, providing just enough space for her to squeeze in. She pressed herself against the wall to ensure she wouldn’t fall off.
She had intended to stay a little longer, waiting to see if Qu Weiyin would sleep soundly. If so, she would go back. But who would have thought that although Qu Weiyin had mentioned being tired, once Luo Jinxiao left, she seemed to be entertaining herself with the candlelight, playing away happily.
It was pitiful for Luo Jinxiao, who had been standing there for quite a while, feeling her limbs begin to stiffen.
However, the candlelight finally dimmed, extinguishing itself, and assuming Qu Weiyin had fallen asleep, Luo Jinxiao opened the door, holding her breath in preparation to step inside.
Suddenly, she heard Qu Weiyin gasp sharply, the shadow on the bed sitting up abruptly, triggering the injuries to her heart and lungs, and she hunched over, coughing violently.
Seeing this, Luo Jinxiao quickly rushed to her side and patted her back. “Master Uncle, are you alright?â€
Qu Weiyin shook her head, drenched in sweat from coughing. With her jade-like arm supporting her on the side, she turned to Luo Jinxiao with a look of astonishment. “What are you doing still here?â€
“I didn’t leave. I wanted to wait until you fell asleep before going back. Did you have another nightmare?†Luo Jinxiao couldn’t hide the worry on her face.
“I dreamed of some past events,†Qu Weiyin replied, her gaze vacantly drifting into the distance.
“It’s nothing serious,†she added.
“Forget it, I’ll stay here with you.†Luo Jinxiao rose, somehow managing to grab a blanket from somewhere, shaking it out and laying it down next to Qu Weiyin’s bed.
With a roll, she flopped onto the ground, propping her head on her arms, her bright eyes sparkling as they looked at Qu Weiyin.
Qu Weiyin no longer refused and, helplessly shaking her head, withdrew her hand and lay down on her side.
“What did you dream about, Master Uncle?†Luo Jinxiao asked suddenly, curiosity piqued.
Qu Weiyin fell silent for a moment before frowning and saying, “I dreamed that I killed you.â€
Luo Jinxiao instinctively averted her eyes, feeling guilty.
“It’s fine; it was just a dream. Besides, even if it were true, go ahead and kill me. I have a good fate,†Luo Jinxiao joked.
“Don’t say such nonsense!†Qu Weiyin suddenly spoke sternly, looking at her in reproach. “You mustn’t joke about that.â€
Luo Jinxiao stuck out her tongue, thinking that it would be best not to share the matters of their past lives with Qu Weiyin, to spare her further guilt.
It might have been the comfort of Luo Jinxiao’s presence, or perhaps Qu Weiyin genuinely wasn’t feeling well. Before long, she grew still again, slipping back into another nightmare, her body curling up tightly as she clutched the corners of the blanket.
Seeing her like this caused Luo Jinxiao to lose any chance of sleep. She got up and sat on the edge of the bed, wiping the sweat from Qu Weiyin’s brow.
The perspiration stuck strands of hair to Qu Weiyin’s skin, making her complexion appear even more flawless and dewy. Luo Jinxiao carefully moved the hair aside, but as she did, her heart raced, and she didn’t know where to place her hands.
It wasn’t that she was inappropriate; rather, it was hard not to have other thoughts when such a delicate and enchanting beauty lay beside her.
Moreover, this beauty was like two different people when asleep; during waking hours, she was cold and aloof, but while dreaming, she clung onto whoever was nearby.
At that moment, Qu Weiyin’s soft, white arms were wrapped tightly around Luo Jinxiao’s own. To avoid disturbing her, Luo Jinxiao bent over, but before long, her back ached from the strain.
She considered switching arms to support Qu Weiyin, but it didn’t seem very useful.
“Jinxiao,†Qu Weiyin murmured lightly, her breath quiet yet clear in the stillness of the room.
Luo Jinxiao’s heart fluttered upon hearing her name in Qu Weiyin’s sleep talk. Letting out a sigh, she gradually lay down next to Qu Weiyin.
After all, there was no strict rule against physical closeness between women, and her courage grew bolder.
With the warmth of soft skin lying beside her, Luo Jinxiao dared not move an inch, keeping her body rigid while staring at the gauzy canopy above them. After a long while, Qu Weiyin finally loosened her grip and succumbed into a deeper sleep.
Luo Jinxiao turned on her side, gazing at Qu Weiyin’s face. Under the moonlight, she looked utterly mesmerizing, captivating enough to make one feel entranced.
Qu Weiyin shifted slightly, moving closer to Luo Jinxiao, enough that they could smell each other’s scents. Luo Jinxiao slowly reached out, but as soon as her fingers brushed against Qu Weiyin, she quickly pulled her hand back.
She was eager to learn more about her, but she understood that now was not the right time.
“Master Uncle, don’t be afraid,†Luo Jinxiao whispered softly.
Qu Weiyin suddenly mumbled something in her sleep, then leaned closer, her cheek resting against Luo Jinxiao’s shoulder. Luo Jinxiao felt her heart skip a beat, tilting her head up and daring not to think too much.
The mature form of the woman beside her was alluring, wrapped in a flowing red dress that accentuated her graceful figure.
Luo Jinxiao suddenly thought that she should find a Buddhist scripture to read tomorrow.
Qu Weiyin slept through the night, and Luo Jinxiao found herself watching her closely the entire time. It was only when dawn began to break that she slowly rolled off the bed, tiptoeing as she left.
Hidden in the dense forest at Wuhui Sect, a quaint bamboo house lay nestled amongst the endless flower fields. As the morning breeze blew, petals fluttered down, softly landing on the rooftop.
Morning mist swirled with floral fragrance, occasionally punctuated by the cheerful chirping of birds, giving the scene an ethereal and tranquil feel.
As Luo Jinxiao walked into the flower field, she noticed the fallen petals had swirled into a path, winding deeper into the woods.
Following the petal trail, she soon spotted the Sect Master standing calmly at the entrance of the house, her silver hair skillfully arranged into a smooth bun, with two strands cascading down to her chest.
The wind caught those loose strands, making them appear even more ethereal.
“Master!†Luo Jinxiao exclaimed with a smile, quickening her pace to meet her.
“Welcome back,†the Sect Master replied with a slight smile.
“Why are you standing at the door so early? Did you somehow know I’d returned?†Luo Jinxiao asked with a cheeky grin as she followed the Sect Master up the bamboo steps and into the house.
“I sensed your return as soon as you came back to Wuhui Sect,†the Sect Master explained.
“Just as expected of the Sect Master,†Luo Jinxiao said, scratching her head. “By the way, I brought the thing you were looking for.â€
As she reached for her bag, she suddenly found it empty at her waist. She paused in confusion and then smacked her forehead. “Oh no! I left the bag on the Master Uncle’s bed!â€
Hearing this, the Sect Master’s clear eyes widened in surprise as she cleared her throat, rolling up her sleeves.
“I was wondering why you didn’t come find me right away; it turns out this matter held you up. No worries; you can just retrieve it later.â€
Luo Jinxiao quickly explained, “Please don’t think anything strange! Master Uncle has a habit of having nightmares, so I was just keeping her company.â€
The Sect Master was right. The moment Luo Jinxiao saw Elder Liu, she found herself fleeing, and the disciples who had risen early for their morning training ran straight into her path. Suddenly, she had no time for her cultivation or studies; everyone was eagerly munching on steamed buns and sipping porridge, all stopping to watch the spectacle.
Luo Jinxiao cried out, pleading with Elder Liu to let her off since she was his disciple, but her appeals were futile. Her loud protests attracted the entire Sect, creating a scene that drew in onlookers from all around, leaving the place crowded. Only then did Elder Liu throw down his vine rod, his face dark with annoyance, and stomp away.
Panting and leaning against a tree, Luo Jinxiao wiped the sweat from her brow. Just then, Lu Fanzhi walked over with a big smile, patting her on the shoulder. “Luo Sister, I’ve heard so much about you! After five years of being in the Sect, still getting beaten by the Master—only you could achieve this!â€
“If you don’t say anything, no one will think you’re a mute,†Luo Jinxiao huffed, still catching her breath.
“Have you seen Master Uncle?†she asked.
“I have! Oh, I forgot to tell you—during the five years you were gone, Master Uncle took on a little disciple. For someone who has never accepted students before, that’s quite a remarkable feat,†Lu Fanzhi mused.
“What? Master Uncle took a disciple?†Luo Jinxiao exclaimed loudly, drawing attention from those nearby.
Lu Fanzhi hurriedly covered her mouth, whispering, “Lower your voice! So what if Master Uncle has accepted a disciple? Why are you so excited? Besides, she hardly teaches the girl; it seems pretty pitiful.â€
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but remain agitated, even furious. Back when she had matched her spirit stone with Qu Weiyin’s, Qu Weiyin had rather smashed her stone than take her on as a disciple. How could she accept someone else so quietly now?
Her anger flared up like a flame, and she stomped around Lu Fanzhi, determined to find out just how capable that little disciple was.
How dare someone snatch her Master Uncle away!
At that moment, Qu Weiyin was in a pavilion near Wuhui Palace, her red garments fluttering in the breeze as she held a book, explaining something to the new disciples. When she saw Luo Jinxiao rushing from a distance, she set the book down and watched her approach.
“Luo Sister!†called a boy named Ke Tao, prompting the others to follow suit.
Suddenly in the spotlight, Luo Jinxiao felt somewhat flustered. She glanced around but didn’t see anyone who looked like they could be the little disciple who had taken her Master Uncle away.
“Continue your discussion; I’ll come back later,†Luo Jinxiao said, trying her best to sound calm and friendly, although the resentment in her eyes was hard to hide.
“No need. If there’s something, just say it,†Qu Weiyin replied coolly.
With a surge of courage, Luo Jinxiao decided to be direct: “Master Uncle, I left my bag on your bed last night!â€
An uproar erupted from the group below; the ten or so new disciples exchanged shocked glances.
Qu Weiyin hadn’t expected this topic to come up. Her hand trembled, and the pristine book slipped from her grip, landing on the ground and soiling a corner with dirt from the flowers.
