Qu Weiyin paused in surprise before playfully tapping Luo Jinxiao on the forehead. “What would I want it for? It costs too much to keep! Put it away; I just wanted to give you the jade pendant.â€
Luo Jinxiao shrank her neck back, then hugged Qiongqi closer. She turned to the still-sleeping creature and said, “Did you hear that? You need to eat less from now on.â€
Once the rain cleared and the sky brightened, they gathered Yan Ying and Luo Ning to say their goodbyes to Hua Xianrui.
“What? You’re leaving so soon?†Hua Xianrui exclaimed, floating up into the air in surprise. “Really, you won’t stay a few more days?â€
“We came specifically for the Clear Pool of Tianshan. Since it’s no longer available, it’s not right for us to linger,†Qu Weiyin replied.
Hua Xianrui turned to look at Luo Jinxiao, her expression one of sorrow and reluctance.
Luo Jinxiao didn’t dare lift her head; she took a few steps back and hid behind Luo Ning.
“Alright, but you have to promise me that you’ll come back to visit,†Hua Xianrui said, waving her arms. A cascade of flower petals flew from the bracelet on her wrist.
“Definitely,†Qu Weiyin responded with a nod before turning to leave. “But not too soon.â€
Luo Jinxiao and the others bowed respectfully, and Hua Xianrui regarded her with lingering affection as she said, “Don’t forget about me when you get back!â€
Luo Jinxiao smiled and then followed Qu Weiyin.
Yan Ying hurried to Luo Jinxiao’s side, excitement dancing in her eyes. “What you said earlier is true, right? You really plan to marry Master Qu?â€
“I admire your courage,†Yan Ying added, a tinge of envy in her tone.
“Of course,†Luo Jinxiao said, swaying her head from side to side in delight.
But as she turned, she met Luo Ning’s gaze. Luo Ning said nothing and averted her eyes.
Luo Jinxiao stepped closer to her, momentarily unsure of how to start the conversation. Ultimately, it was Luo Ning who spoke first: “Don’t worry about me, Sister. Just be happy.â€
“I don’t want to interfere with any of your choices,†Luo Ning added, an inexplicable pang of emotion in her words.
As the group exited the Demon Realm and prepared to take flight on their swords, they suddenly noticed a turbulent wind stirring in the distance. Trees and flowers bent to the ground, while flashes of blades and swords danced in the air as they moved westward.
“What’s happening over there?†Luo Jinxiao instinctively drew out Wu Jue.
Qu Weiyin shielded her eyes with her hand and furrowed her brows, observing for a moment before speaking, “It’s the Death Sect. What are they doing around here?â€
“Could it be that they followed us?†Yan Ying chimed in.
Qu Weiyin shook her head at that: “No, if they were tailing us, I would have sensed them. It must be something else. They seem to be hunting something.â€
Luo Jinxiao had always held a negative impression of the Death Sect, so she suggested they investigate, and the others agreed.
As they drew nearer, they detected a faint demonic aura and soon saw a group of men in black attacking a shadowy figure, the sounds of clashing weapons ringing through the air.
It appeared they were trying to eliminate a demon; the demon they were pursuing looked ragged and as if it had just fled from somewhere. Its strength was ebbing away, reduced to merely dodging and fleeing.
“Jinxiao, I think that demon looks a bit familiar,†Qu Weiyin suddenly said. She took a couple of steps forward, retrieving the yellow paper bag they had used to contain Xiuer from Luo Jinxiao’s sleeve, lifting it high.
Sure enough, upon sensing the demonic aura, Xiuer began to thrash around inside, nearly breaking free from the paper bag.
Without a second thought, Qu Weiyin tossed the bag back to Luo Jinxiao and transformed into a beam of light, instantly appearing amidst the group. The Death Sect was caught off guard as their formation began to crumble.
Qu Weiyin shielded the tree demon behind her and launched a counterattack.
Naturally, Luo Jinxiao couldn’t let her dive into battle alone; she followed closely behind. Wu Jue swept across the ground, leveling the brush and forcing a dozen opponents backward. They fell several paces away, quickly finding themselves disarrayed and scattered.
Interruption from the sudden attack left the members of the Death Sect furious. Just as one of them opened his mouth to shout, he caught sight of Luo Jinxiao’s face and fell silent.
After all, the accounts of Luo Jinxiao defeating demons had already spread far and wide.
They exchanged wary glances, and after a long pause, one of them stepped forward and tried to speak calmly, “Fellow cultivators, we are disciples of the Death Sect. We’ve merely come out for training and happened upon this demon; we are trying to eliminate it.â€
“I’m sure you all can recognize the demon for what it is,†he continued.
“Let’s show some courtesy and spare her life,†Luo Jinxiao said, her expression cautious.
The man was about to say more when someone leaned in close to whisper in his ear. Upon noticing Qu Weiyin, his expression shifted to one of alarm, and he suddenly glared at Luo Jinxiao, retreating sharply.
“It’s a demon!†he shouted, quickly drawing his weapon and aiming it at Qu Weiyin. Seeing this, Luo Jinxiao instinctively stepped in front of Qu Weiyin to shield her.
“The demon clan is bloodthirsty and brutal! How can you, Luo, associate such a being? Are you opposing us and the Immortal Realm?†he barked, brandishing a black longsword, his eyes narrowed menacingly.
However, due to Luo Jinxiao’s cultivation level, they dared not advance.
Luo Jinxiao sensed Qu Weiyin’s rising anger, and a pang of fear gripped her heart. Worried that Qu Weiyin might lose her temper, she quickly turned to Luo Ning and instructed, “Stop her!†Then, she shot forward like an arrow to confront the Death Sect.
Those disciples were not very strong, and even though Luo Jinxiao had no intention of causing harm, they stood no chance against her. Within a few exchanges, they were all on the ground, clutching their chests, groaning in pain, and not one could rise. They were too frightened to even think about capturing demons; they were already on the verge of fleeing.
“Why can’t you listen to reason? You insist on speaking without thinking—truly foolish,†Luo Jinxiao said dismissively, flipping her palm so that Wu Jue vanished.
She turned to face Qu Weiyin, her tone softening as she said gently, “Let’s leave this place. These people are peculiar; we don’t want them to bother us again.â€
Qu Weiyin nodded in agreement, and the group didn’t stop until they were far enough away to no longer see the Death Sect.
The tree demon swayed unsteadily for a moment, finally managing to find her footing. She looked up; her originally glossy dark green hair now appeared quite wilted, and she gave off an aura of decay.
Her gaze towards Luo Jinxiao and Qu Weiyin was filled with gratitude and astonishment. Then, she bowed deeply and expressed her thanks.
“What exactly happened? Xiuer can’t speak, so we can only guess. Why did you leave her behind?†Qu Weiyin asked.
“You saw her? How is she doing? Is she safe now?†The tree demon raised her voice, her eyes lighting up with concern as she eagerly inquired.
“She is doing well now,†Luo Jinxiao said as she placed the paper bag in her palm. With a flash of white light, the fragile, slender figure of Xiuer appeared on the ground. Her face was streaked with tears as she rushed towards the tree demon.
The tree demon, both shocked and overjoyed, quickly embraced her. The two of them clung to each other, lost for words, weeping silently.
A strange feeling flickered in Luo Jinxiao’s heart as she looked at Qu Weiyin, who was also meeting her gaze. In Qu Weiyin’s blood-red eyes, she could see relief and deep emotion reflected back.
After a while, the tree demon finally lifted her head. Laughing through her tears, she said, “I apologize for my display. How embarrassing.â€
“After I took Xiuer with me, I retreated to the depths of the mountains to live a quiet life. But one day, many cultivators came seeking to eliminate demons. I simply could not withstand so many. Xiuer stepped forward to help and was injured, nearly losing her life.â€
“In order to save her, I gave her my inner core and was taken away myself, locked in a demon-confining tower whose location remains unknown.â€
“For years, I’ve been finding ways to escape. It was only recently that I managed to break free, using the remnants of my powers. I’ve been searching for Xiuer everywhere, but to no avail. Hearing that the Demon Realm might shelter and protect homeless demons, I traveled here, hoping she might be found nearby. However, I spent several days wandering without finding an entrance, and today I nearly lost my life at the hands of those men.â€
“You two have saved us twice. I honestly don’t know how to repay you,†the tree demon said, her knees buckling slightly as if she might kneel. Fortunately, Qu Weiyin was quick to catch her, preventing her from falling.
Qu Weiyin appeared genuinely moved. Her lips parted slightly as she softly said, “There’s no need for thanks. We are fated to help you; it’s nothing more than a small favor.â€
Suppressing her tears, the tree demon looked half-pained, half-sorrowful as she brushed her fingers through Xiuer’s uncombed hair, tidying it.
“I’m sorry,†she whispered. Xiuer let out a soft whimper, holding onto her tightly and refusing to let go.
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t bear to watch this scene. She forced a smile and reassured them, “It’s a good thing you’re reunited. The entrance to the Demon Realm is not far from here; why don’t I take you both inside?â€
“Thank you, but we wouldn’t want to trouble you,†the tree demon replied with a smile, shaking her head. “I’ve been living in a little cottage on the mountain these days. If you don’t mind, you can come sit with us.â€
Upon hearing this, Xiuer wiped her tears away, grabbed the tree demon’s hand, and turned back to Luo Jinxiao and Qu Weiyin, smiling with hopeful eyes.
“Alright,†Qu Weiyin said with a slight smile, agreeing to their invitation.
The tree demon’s cottage was not far away; it was just over a small hill. The place appeared to have been deserted for quite some time, as the interior and courtyard were quite empty, yet the tree demon had kept everything impeccably clean.
Inside were simple wooden tables and chairs, all very unadorned. From the back of the house, the view revealed mountains linked together, rolling on toward the horizon until they met the sky.
“Please, have a seat,†the tree demon said, rearranging the furniture with a shy demeanor. Once the four were seated, she suddenly took Xiuer’s hand and smiled, “I want to stand here with Xiuer before heaven and earth, to bind our hearts forever.â€
Luo Jinxiao was taken aback, exclaiming, “So suddenly?â€
“After being locked in the demon-confining tower, my longing for Xiuer grew stronger. I thought if I could express my feelings to her sooner, perhaps there wouldn’t be so many regrets.â€
“Some things can’t be delayed; in the future, it might truly lead to regret.†She looked up, her eyes shimmering with tears.
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but glance at Qu Weiyin.
Meanwhile, Yan Ying appeared even more excited than the others as she pointed at Luo Jinxiao, saying, “You were just discussing marriage! Since you’re both together now, why not hold a ceremony right here, fulfilling your wishes in advance?â€
As she spoke, she cautiously glanced at Luo Ning but could only see her indifferent profile, leaving her feeling somewhat disheartened.
Luo Jinxiao, inspired by Yan Ying’s suggestion, reached over to tug on Qu Weiyin’s sleeve, softly saying, “What do you think? Should we listen to Yan Ying?â€
Qu Weiyin’s cheeks flushed a light shade of red, and she gave a gentle “mm†in response.
“Wonderful!†Luo Jinxiao couldn’t contain her glee and clapped the table excitedly, her smile wide.
The group quickly reached a consensus. Although the conditions in the cottage were rudimentary, they lacked for nothing essential. The tree demon and Xiuer immediately went outside to gather supplies for a feast, hand in hand, while Yan Ying and Luo Ning split up to fetch water and tend to other chores. Before long, the cottage was left with just Luo Jinxiao and Qu Weiyin.
A sense of dazed anticipation enveloped Luo Jinxiao as she gently exhaled a breath.
“What’s wrong?†Qu Weiyin suddenly asked, standing up. Her cool fingertips brushed across Luo Jinxiao’s face, and her gaze was gentle.
Luo Jinxiao shook her head and smiled softly, “I just find it incredible.â€
This beautiful woman whom she loved was about to truly bind herself to her forever.
At her words, Qu Weiyin pulled Luo Jinxiao up from the chair, facing her and speaking softly, “So do I. This is something completely absurd and ridiculous compared to my usual life.â€
As she spoke, her red lips curled into a smile, enchanting and ethereal. Her delicate hands cupped Luo Jinxiao’s face, tenderly stroking it as if handling a precious treasure.
“I feel that the tree demon and Xiuer are just like us, obstructed by many things. So watching them always makes me reflect,†Qu Weiyin said, her eyes shimmering as they blinked softly. “I truly want to be with you for all eternity.â€
“So do I,†Luo Jinxiao replied in a hushed voice.
A day later, the cottage had been transformed, adorned with bright red silk, simple yet festive and joyful.
The table outside was laden with offerings of fruits and roasted meats, two red incense sticks burning, their fragrant smoke wafting up to the heavens.
Luo Jinxiao was dressed early that morning by Yan Ying in a vibrant red wedding gown, her hair simply held up with a pin. She was not accustomed to wearing red, but when she tried it on, it made her complexion appear even more delicate and fair, giving her a stunning and radiant look.
Even Yan Ying, who was usually critical, couldn’t find a single fault.
Luo Jinxiao was restrained from seeing Qu Weiyin in advance, and she felt a wave of restlessness. She paced back and forth in the room, occasionally stretching her neck to catch a glimpse, concerned about how Qu Weiyin was preparing.
She was sure Qu Weiyin would look exquisite.
