Halloween was on the horizon at Hogwarts. Floating pumpkins dawned the halls. Gryffindor was holding a party in the evening for Halloween. The house was famous for their after hours parties, full of drinks, dancing and some drugs. Kate had attended many of these in her time at Hogwarts. After a won quidditch match, birthdays, a lost quidditch match, Halloween, Christmas or just because someone wanted to hold one.
Everyone was waiting for the annual prank that the marauders would pull. The festering anxiety of wondering what was going to happen in the next couple of hours. They had the teachers on edge, waiting to shut it down. The longer the wait the more anticipation built up.
It finally happened at dinner. Noises were coming the grounds outside. Whizzing and popping noises enticed everyone to get up to their seats and rush to see what the palaver that was going on outside.
Kate opted to stay near the back of the crowd and to watch from the windows of the castle as to avoid the rush.
The sky was lit up with with bright fireworks. Shooting up then exploding into dazzling colours, spreading across the sky. Then fireworks that formed into shapes were projected into the air. An orange jack-o-lantern, started to dance in the sky. Then fading but being quickly replaced by a ghost, flying around and then also dissipating. Many other Halloween light shows, brightened the sky, filling everyone’s eyes reflecting and swirling.
After the beautiful light show everyone made their way back to the great hall. Everything had been stuck upside down. The tables and benches were stuck to the ceiling. Somehow even the food and drink had stuck upside down.
Kate had to admit their level of magic was incredible, they had a lot of talent.
“Happy Halloween!” They shouted in unison and quickly ran away from the hall as to avoid detention from the professors.
“Off you go!” Mcgonagall shouted to the rest of the student body.
Everyone then made their way up to their dorms to get ready for the party that night. All Gryffindors, Ravenclaws, Hufflepuffs and some select Slytherins fifth year and above were invited.

The girls were now in their dorm getting ready for the Halloween party. They were doing a group costume, they were going as Mystery inc. Marlene was Fred, Lily was Daphne, Kate was Velma, Alice was shaggy, and Dorcas was Scooby. Marlene was wearing a white top and some flared blue jeans. Lily was wearing a purple body-con dress with a green headband. Alice was wearing a brown skirt and green top. Dorcas was wearing a brown dress with some ears. Finally, Kate was wearing an orange body-con dress, that accentuated her figure, and a pair of fake glasses on her forehead.
The music was now thumping from the common room making the floor vibrate.
“We look fit.” Marlene said.
“Yea we do, ready to get drunk?” Dorcas shouts.
“Fuck yes!”
Kate wasn’t planning on getting too drunk, only planning on having a couple shots.
The girls start to make their way down the stairs towards the common room. The loud music pounding in Kate’s ears. The common room was decorated in cobwebs, hanging ghosts and more jack-o-lanterns.
“I’m going to go and get a drink!” Kate shouted over the loud music.
“Alright see you in a bit.” Alice said and also wandered off, probably to find Frank.
Kate walked over to the drinks table and poured herself a shot and quickly threw it back. Then pouring a vodka coke to sip on throughout the night.
Going back to find her friends, Kate locates Lily and sits down next to her.
“Fuck me it’s loud in here.” Kate said. “I can feel the vibration in my skull.
“Yea, I swear Black always turns it all the way up.” Lily replied. “I’m not going to be able to hear tomorrow.”
Then the song ‘heart of glass’ came on.
“LILY, it’s our song, cmon let’s dance!” Kate shouted excitedly and dragged Lily to the makeshift dance floor in the middle of the common room.
As both of the girls were the only muggleborns in the group made them more versed in muggle music, whereas Alice, Marlene and Dorcas preferred magical bands.
They reached the middle of the dance floor and started to feel the music. Kate stood with her back to Lily and started to sway her hips to the beat while singing along to the song.
Kate then turned around and grabbed Lily’s hands and spun her around.
The euphoric feeling of dancing in a crowd a sheen of sweat making you sparkle, all while screaming your favourite song with one of your best friends. The buzz from the vodka helped too.
Lily then took the turn to spin Kate around, where she came face to face with Marlene.
“‘Marl!” Kate said, pulling her into their dance circle. Kate started to dance with her back to Marlene now, running her fingertips along her waist then up into the air. Kate turned around and wrapped her arms around Marlene’s neck.
“Where’s Dor?” Kate asked.
“She went to go and get a drink, she’ll be back now.” Marlene answered and grabbed Kates waist. They both moved in sync to the song that was blasting through the room.
“I love your top, makes your boobs look great, you’ve got to let me borrow it!”
“Yea. Whenever you want. What’s mine is yours.” She answered.
Marlene and Kate had bonded over the years, both finding solitude in each other after both coming out. Kate coming out as bi in their fourth year, Marlene had also come out as a lesbian last year, and Kate was 99% sure she had a thing for Dorcas. And Kate was 80% sure Dorcas had a thing for Marlene back.
Her evidence? When Dorcas was going to tell her who she fancied a couple weeks ago, she incredibly quickly changed the subject when Marlene made her way over to the table.
Speak of the devil. “Dor, come dance with us.”
Kate didn’t really give Dorcas a chance to answer and dragged her to join them. They now had started dancing as a three. Kate hadn’t been this buzzed in a while, feeling like her body was vibrating.
But then, that’s when she saw him.
Amos and Lily. Dancing. Kate knew she really shouldn’t let it effect her as muck but she couldn’t help but feel worthless and unwanted when she saw them together.
“Guys, it’s really hot in here, and I’m fucking buzzed, I’m going to go and get some air. I’ll see you in a minute.” Kate said breathlessly, already spinning around her hair haloing around her.
She was trying to escape the common room, ushering through the dense crowd of drink teenagers dancing and grinding on each other. Bumping shoulders with so many people on the usually short journey to the portrait hole.
Finally stumbling through a couple that was snogging. She finally was hit in the face with the cool air of the corridors of the hogwarts castle.
She haphazardly made her way to the end of the corridor, leaning against the wall and taking deep breaths as to 1. Calm down. 2. Halt the tears.
The cold stone was rough against her back as she pressed against it, also cooling her down. Kate felt like an idiot. Why had she even dated that asshole in the first place?
Kate’s head was spinning, not because of the drink, she had now significantly sobered up. She felt like she hadn’t even had a drink in the first place. Seeing them together felt like she had been drenched in a bucket of ice cold water.
She wanted nothing more than to tell someone, but that would sabotage Lily’s happiness, and that mattered more to Kate than how she felt. Even though Amos was a dick, he was nice enough to make Lily smile every day.
Lily’s hogwarts journey hadn’t been easy. As a muggle born, prejudice was a part of every day life. Being called a mud blood by every Slytherin pure bloods, who thought that they were better because they had come from a family with ‘pure’ blood.
Of course, Kate had also experienced this too but she wasn’t friends with a bigot since childhood. One of the most satisfying things Kate had seen was Severus Snape having the shit slapped out of him by Lily for calling her a mud blood. The sound of skin colliding with skin was music to her ears. This meant that as they shared experiences and therefore grew close over the years.

“Do you want to go somewhere more quiet?” Amos asked Lily over the loud music.
“Yea, it’s very noisy in here.” She answered.
–
Unbeknownst to Kate, James had seen she was upset and followed her out of the party.
“Kate!” James Hollered from down the corridor and jogged towards her.
“Hey.” She said simply.
“You ok?” He asked looking down on her, dressed in a pirate costume. The cotton shirt he was wearing had a rip in the neck, exposing some of his chest. He also dawned a fake hook for a hand.
“Aye aye captain.” She said sarcastically with a weak smile.
“I’m sorry, really.” He said sympathetically.
His eyes were soft in the dim lighting of the corridor.
James saw them then, holding hands, giggling and laughing, looking smitten. He panicked then. Not wanting Kate to be upset further than she already was about the couple.
“You know when I said you owed me a favour?”
Kate nodded.
