“Mhok.”
Day repeated his name to register it into his memory.
It was nice to put a name to a voice.
“I should get going,” Mhok checked his watch, “My boss is going to kick me out.” He made it sound as if it was funny, but Day sensed that it was probably true that he could get fired.
“I’m sorry. I took a lot of your time. I can talk to your boss- “
Mhok cut him off, “It’s ok, it’s not your fault. I’m leaving now. Bye.”
Day nodded slowly, contemplating whether it was okay to let this issue slide, “Bye.”
When he felt that Mhok was gone, he stepped inside and closed the door, making sure to lock it.
He strode towards the dining table and occupied a seat. Unboxing the pack, he took out the pastry.
His eyes lit up as the familiar aroma of the red velvet cake hit him. He missed his mom now. He fondly remembered how she used to bake this particular cake on his birthdays.
A sad smile graced his lips as he located the cake with a fork first before cutting a small portion.
Cake was one of the most difficult foods to eat for Day. Somehow, he managed to bring it to his mouth. It tasted splendid. Maybe it was not as good as his mother’s, and that could be because Day was biased.
He ate the cake silently as the nostalgia engulfed him. His throat constricted.
He shook his head. He had no time to cry.
Discarding the cake cover in a trashcan, he decided that he should try writing since he could feel ideas overflowing in his head.
After rummaging through his drawer for some time, he finally caught hold of a slate and stylus. It was double the effort of writing normally, but it was not like he had any other option.
With his tools, he began to write his book. Hours had passed, but that didn’t stop Day from completing five chapters that day.
It was already night by the time Day had decided that he should call it another day.
He wore a satisfied expression. The cake had worked magic. He decided that he could use a lot of it in the near future.
Standing and massaging his stiff joints, he decided to skip dinner and just go to bed instead. It wasn’t a strange occurrence anyway. Day had done it before.
Today’s excuse for skipping meals was that he was exhausted to order and eat takeout.
The hunger pains did not stop him from crawling into the bed and relaxing himself.
The events from early morning flashed across his mind. He thought about Mhok. He hoped that his boss wouldn’t tell him off because of their prolonged chat this morning.
Mhok seemed like a kind person to Day. He didn’t pry about Day’s blindness and treated him as if he were normal.
Day’s eyes widened when he realized that. Mhok had treated him just like any other person.
Mhok had not taken pity on Day.
