Mhok woke up to the most beautiful sight he had ever seen.
Day was still asleep on his lap, looking calmer and more comfortable than ever. Through the open window, the sunbeam fell on him gracefully, casting a golden hue on that already beautiful man.
Mhok could never get enough of that sight.
He wished that he could engrave that image in his mind forever. He wanted to run his fingers through Day’s hair in a soothing way, but he settled on caressing Day with his eyes instead.
After a few more minutes, Day began to shift in his sleep and finally woke up.
Mhok could see each and every emotion that Day went through in detail. Day was indeed panicked and confused. Day realised that he was not in his usual sleeping spot.
Day’s hands wandered over to where he laid- which happened to be Mhok’s lap.
“Where am I?” Mhok caught Day’s curious hands just before things escalated, “P’Mhok?”
“Day,” Mhok left his hands slowly, “Don’t panic. We’re on the couch.”
Day was up straight, “Couch?”
Day didn’t seem to immediately remember yesternight’s events.
“Yes. It was raining, and we decided to sit here and chat for a while, and then you fell asleep.” Mhok was embarrassed as he said the last part.
“Oh.” Now, Day was embarrassed as well, “Sorry, you probably couldn’t sleep well then.”
“No, I slept just fine.” Mhok mentally felt fresh and energetic, but physically, he was aching and tired.
“You couldn’t go home because of me, I feel bad.” Day bowed his head, facing his lap.
“It’s no problem, Day.” Mhok interjected quickly, “I don’t mind it.”
Day reluctantly believed that.
Soon, they busied themselves with their daily chores and duties.
After breakfast, Mhok fixed the indoor kennel for Hazel.
Hazel’s happy sounds filled the room as he made himself comfortable in his new home.
“Someone’s in a good mood,” Day commented as he dried his wet hair.
“He seems really pleased with his new environment,” Mhok chuckled.
Mhok played with Hazel for a while. Now that he had finished with Hazel’s home, Mhok decided to perform his duty as a faithful amanuensis. His amanuensis.
Mhok grabbed a piece of cake from the refrigerator before he walked into Day’s room. The door was open, which meant that Day was expecting Mhok.
Mhok knocked anyway. He wanted his presence to be known.
“Day?”
“Yes, P’Mhok.”
Mhok smiled and made his way towards Day, who sat on the bed, “Here’s your order, Sir.”
Day pulled his eyebrows into a frown, “Hm?”
Shaking his head, Mhok carefully placed the plate in Day’s hands, “Your daily dose of motivation, I mean cake.”
Day threw a fake glare in Mhok’s direction, “If you make fun of my sweet tooth again, I’ll fire you, P’Mhok.”
It was difficult to take Day seriously when he had that pout on.
“Oh my!” Mhok gasped, “I should be really careful then.”
Day laughed and ate the sweet dish in silence.
“So, let’s get started?” Mhok asked as Day put the plate aside.
Day smiled and nodded.
As usual, Day began narrating the story, and Mhok, without any interruption, typed it all carefully.
He was getting better at this as time passed. He’d started to enjoy this work. They took occasional breaks, and by evening, they stopped as always.
“Gosh!” Mhok ran a hand through his hair, “I can’t wait to know what happens next. Arques has to win the battle, or else everything will be ruined.”
Day laughed at Mhok’s enthusiasm and involvement in his story, “You’ll know soon.”
“Using the author card, aren’t you?”
Day shrugged, “Yes, why not?”
Mhok smiled, shaking his head.
After a while, Mhok asked, “Have you thought about going outside?”
Day was surprised by Mhok’s unexpected question, but he swiftly recovered from the initial shock, “Yes, I have. It’s not that I hate going out. It’s just that I feel vulnerable every time I go out.”
“I understand. Do you want to go for a walk today? Hazel will like it.” Mhok asked carefully.
“Uhm..”
Noticing his hesitation, Mhok added, “It’s okay if you don’t want to- “
“Let’s go.”
Mhok’s eyes widened. Day had actually agreed to this.
“Okay then,” Mhok couldn’t stop grinning.
After five minutes, they were already by the front door.
“Are you ready?” Mhok looked at Day in anticipation.
Day nodded in determination.
Day wanted to feel free again.
Mhok turned the doorknob and stepped out with Hazel. Hazel was on a leash, and Mhok was in charge of that.
The weather was on their side that evening; it was only slightly windy.
“Come on, Day.”
Putting his hands forward, Day stepped outside after a long time. He closed his eyes and immersed himself in the moment, breathing in deeply.
He had missed this feeling. Feeling of freedom.
Wind blew, making Day’s hair fall out of place, but he didn’t care. He was too happy to care.
All this while, Mhok stared at him in pride and joy.
Hazel barked and tugged at the leash, making Mhok laugh, “Someone’s impatient.”
Day chuckled as well, “Well then, let’s get going.”
Mhok walked towards Day, “I’m here.”
Day nodded and looped their arms.
Day didn’t need his walking stick today.
Mhok calmed down his butterflies and began walking with Day sticking close to him and Hazel guiding them.
Mhok felt like his life was finally complete now. All the pieces were finally fixed in the puzzle.
Once in a while, Mhok explained in detail about their surroundings, and Day was grateful for that.
Throughout their walk, Day had a permanent smile on his face, for which Mhok was really glad.
The sky was threatening to shed rain, so they decided to return. They had walked enough anyway.
By the time they reached home, it was already drizzling slightly.
Day was about to open the door, but he turned around instead.
“P’Mhok?”
“Yes, Day?”
“I’m giving my guest room for rent.”
“Huh?”
“Do you perhaps know someone who’s okay with sharing a home with a blind and sweet man?”
Mhok couldn’t believe his ears, “A-Are you sure, Day?”
Day nodded, “I am.”
“You’re not going to deduct the rent from my salary, are you?” Mhok tried to make a joke even though his heart was beating erratically against his chest.
Day shrugged, “Maybe.”
Mhok sighed dramatically, “Although it’s not fair, yet how can I refuse the offer of a blind and sweet man?”
An involuntary blush adorned Day’s face.
Day made himself believe that his heart didn’t flutter at Mhok’s words.
But, Day knew that he was lying.
