“We’ve reached.”
Mhok exited the car and scurried to Day’s side. He helped Day to get out of the car.
Day closed his eyes and spread his arms, feeling the cool breeze, “I’ve missed the sea.”
Mhok smiled and took Day’s hand in his, “Let’s go, then.”
The evening sky looked golden when they took steps toward the beach. There weren’t many people around, luckily. Mhok led him to an empty area, and they both sat down in the sand.
They sat in silence for the longest time as they enjoyed the tranquility that the beach offered. It was undoubtedly comforting. Day intently listened to the sound of the waves, subconsciously burying his toes in the sand.
“This was a good idea,” Day began, “Even though this journey was supposed to make you relax yet I’m the one enjoying it more.”
Mhok chuckled, “I’m glad you like this. Don’t worry, I’m relaxed now.”
“Are you sure?” Day turned to face him, “You were so drained yesterday. You need this break more than anyone.”
Mhok shook his head and smiled, “Ah, is it so? Who thought that owning a business was this difficult?”
Day put his hand on Mhok’s shoulder, “You’ve done a great job for the past few months. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself, P’Mhok.”
He nodded, “I guess I shouldn’t then.”
“Yeah, the employees like you, and they are dedicated as well. Just keep going like this. The bakery is still experiencing profit, so I suggest you don’t stress about it anymore. Hm?”
Mhok smiled, “Thank you, Day.”
“There’s no need- “
“For staying by my side.”
Day was stunned, “P’Mhok.” With that, he wrapped his arms around Mhok, “It’s me who should thank you for staying by my side. If you weren’t in my life, then I wouldn’t have achieved my dream.”
“It’s not true, Day.” He broke the hug and cupped Day’s face, “You’re a talented man. You would’ve been successful anyway.”
Day smiled, “You think that?”
“I’m sure of that.”
“I’m still thankful,” He put his hand on top of Mhok’s, “You made my life better ever since the day I met you. How long has it been now?” Day began racking his brain.
“It’s been over a year and a half since we met.” Mhok informed, “And eleven months and twenty days since we became lovers.”
Day laughed in astonishment, “You really are something, Phi.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment then,” They both laughed.
Mhok glanced at the vast sea that laid before them, gathering the courage to do what he planned to do for the past week.
“Day,” He held his hand, “I have something for you.”
He blinked a couple of times, “Okay. Give me then.”
Mhok gulped in nervousness and rummaged through his backpack before he found it. He handed it over to Day with shaky hands.
Day recognized it at the first touch itself. It was a braille paper.
“P’Mhok- “
“Just read it.”
Day nodded and began to run his fingers over the letters on the paper.
Dear Day,
Thank you for being with me this whole time. So, can I be greedy and ask you to stay with me forever?
Day’s eyes widened as he read the next words. His heart pounded in his chest and he couldn’t believe what he just read. He ran his fingers over and over again to confirm what he read.
Will you marry me?
He faced Mhok as he completed reading the letter, “How long did it take to write this?”
Mhok scratched his neck. This was not the reaction he was expecting. “Two weeks. Writing in braille is harder than I thought. I’m still not completely fluent yet.”
Day’s eyes watered, “All this for me?”
“Yes,” Mhok stated, “I mean I could’ve done the classic getting on the knee and proposing but I wanted to try something different. Looks like it didn’t go as I- “
“P’Mhok,” Day interrupted his nervous ranting, “Calm down.”
“Okay,” He took a deep breath, “So what is your answer, Day?”
Day smiled softly, “It’s a yes. It has always been.”
Mhok had the biggest smile upon hearing his answer, “What? Really?” Day adored this side of him. The lovestruck teenager side.
“Oh, I almost forgot,” He put his hand in his bag again and pulled out a small box this time.
He opened the box, taking the platinum ring. He took Day’s hand and slowly slid it through his ring finger.
“Oh, someone’s prepared.” Day giggled even though his eyes were filled with tears of joy.
“Of course,” Mhok held their hands together, “So, we’re marrying?”
“Yes, P’Mhok.” Day smiled, amused by his adorable boyfriend, “We are.”
“So, you don’t mind being stuck with me for the rest of your life?” Mhok asked, teasing him.
“Yeah.” Day played along, “I guess I can handle that much.”
Mhok grinned again and pulled Day onto his feet. In that moment, he felt like the happiest man alive.
“How can we come to the beach and not jump into the sea?” Mhok pulled Day closer to the sea.
He stopped when the waves reached their feet. It was like he was silently asking for Day’s permission.
Day held his hand tightly, “Come on, P’Mhok! Don’t back off now, you scaredy cat.” He teased.
“Aha, so that’s how we playing now!” With that, they ran into the sea, playing in the water without a care about this world.
They didn’t have to care about trivial worldly problems anymore; after all they had each other forever.
After all they were stuck with each other forever.
