I sat in my house wondering how I was going to survive turning young dumb people into soldiers who could fight. I was no longer a soldier in the field.
After the injury, they put me on city duty. I was not okay with it but I accepted that was what the rules were. It had been 1 year since I was off the field and I got used to it.
Until last night. I received an email requesting me to become an MTI (military training instructor) also known as drill Sergent but only for these 50 trainees. They were needed to be stationed in as military protection agents after military training.
Which means they will protect political leaders and other influential leaders like rich people but still under the title of Army.
So I would be transforming civilians into soldiers.
The reason it was urgent was that the last Instructor had an emergency in which he was forced to retire. Leaving his trainees without an Instructor. They wanted someone who had served to turn the recruites into very skilled military agents who could protect political leaders.
I was going to continue where he left off. I had packed my bag and all I had to do was wait for the transportation car.
I hoped the trainees were not too weak. But then I remembered my love for teary little weaklings.
I fed off fear.
I had served in the army for 12 years. Moved myself up to a captain of sorts before the injury. That title as a woman came harder than most. Even though I was honored, I still wanted to fight for my country.
Maybe turning these new recruites into brave strong unstoppable soldiers was also a way to serve my country.
By 3pm the car had arrived. I had packed all my uniforms and everything I would need while living at the training barracks.
“I never thought I would see the day Captain Chase would have to train recruites. Or should i say, Sergeant Chase now”
Sergeant Chase. Had a nice respectful ring to it huh?. Oh yes that was me, the so called respected soldier.
Chase Wright.
My full name but most people who knew me from the army just called me Captain. My army name was more known than my actual name.
“Well life is definitely full of surprises Private Percy”
I served alongside him for a few months in Afghanistan. We trained together as recruites too. He was also a retired soldier who didn’t want to just sit around so he became a driver for the military.
“I already feel sorry for them. You are one cruel motherfucker. That’s exactly why they chose you” Percy joked.
“I do what I gotta do. Remember Private Donald. That man was a devil but he made us tough strong soldiers who led our country into victory.”
“It’s not that I’m ungrateful but that man was a sadistic fuck. If he wasn’t dead, I would have punched his balls at least once”
“Percy you are still obsessed with balls even now?” I side eyed the old man.
“Only my husband’s. I’m not allowed to appreciate anyone else’s” Percy Chuckled shaking his had with a fake frown.
The whole way we talked about our old military days. You would think we were the same age but I was 33. He was 40.
But seeing one of the men I walked side by side with made my mind be more sure about training the kids. Our trainer was cruel. He showed no mercy and that was what I wanted. To prepare them hard enough so they could survive out there.
If his ways turned me into a strong amazing soldier, why wouldn’t it work on these kids?. We arrived at the training base by night time.
I was escorted to the military house. Memories flooded back to the days I was training. Still young and determined. I joined the army when I was 17.
I looked around the place before I went to sleep. They had left the program and everything I needed to train the recruites. They were only on Phase Blue Week 5.
The documents showed how well the recruites were performing. The best student was a girl named Jaimie Cruza. She seemed to be doing very impressive. I looked through the chats and my eyes read the name of the student doing very poorly. At the bottom of the chart.
Aidan Black.
I looked over her chart and she seemed to be struggling. 19 years old. Born in Texas but raised in Iraq to live with her Grandparents who were killed during a war.
If Aidan lived in a country that literally breath in war, how was she doing bad?. She lived there until she was 10 years old then she was brought back home afterwards in which her parents rejected her and she had to be put in the system for 3 years before she was adopted.
There was no further information about her after the adoption. It didn’t say who adopted her. Nothing after her adoption just when she signed up for the army.
I closed her file.
My trainees were all female.
My focus was to make their charts match. All of them to be the best. The next morning, I was walking in to their bay at 3am. They slept in a huge hall with bunk beds.
I walked in with two metal poles then hit them together moving bed by bed.
“Everybody up!!! Everybody wake up!”
They all jumped out of beds looking scared. All of them stood In a line bed by bed hair a mess. All of them jumped up quick then stood in line.
“You are 5 weeks away from graduation and you still get to sleep?. You are going to be soldiers, fighting for your country, serving your country, saving lives!!! And you get to sleep the whole night?”
They all stood straight hands behind their back with their heads held high.
“My name is Sergeant Chase. You will call me as such and respect me as well. From now on you will be working 5 times harder. I want your bones to ache!!! Your backs to burn, your chests on fire. I want soldiers!!. Am I understood!”
“Sir yes sir!!!” They all sang in tune.
“Ignorance?. Am I a man?. Everybody look at me, am I a man!!?” I stepped around between between both bays.
“No, ma’am”
“It’s Sergeant to you!!. For the Ignorance of not paying attention to my gender, let’s run 3 miles to the lake!!! I will meet you there in 20 minutes!”
“Yes, Sergeant!!”
They were trained. They were not like new trainees. I couldn’t imagine how I would have been feeling if they asked me to start with new comers. Stupid, dumb and wreckless.
I watched them march out of the bays in line then got to running.
I smiled feeling cruel. Oh it did feel good. I finally understood how the Trainer who trained us felt. Watching us suffer. These 3am calls were nothing compared to the things he put us through.
I walked to where they parked the vehicles looking for the one I was going to use. It was a truck with a tent covering the whole back. I still remembered the lake.
I had only 2 friends during my days of training. One friend did not get to graduation due to possession of drugs and another one died during war. But the memories we shared still laked in my mind.
The sneaking out, smoking and going for a swim during the night. The mischief of our training days.
I drove the truck hating how bumpy and uncomfortable it was driving in these military camps. I got to the lake in 10 minutes time then waited.
I wanted to see who would arrive first. My biggest bet was the Jaimie trainee. She was the best after all. I took out a cigarette to smoke while waiting.
Taking my time to reminisce the time I almost drowned in the damned lake the first time we sneaked out. Back then, things were far too different. The lake was an odd creepy place where male soldiers used to take advantage of female trainees.
I didn’t know if things had changed from 12 years ago which gave me a reason to wait for the trainees instead.
4 minutes left 2 people came through the woods. They ran until they were standing in front of me.
“Names soldiers!” I demanded stepping on my cigarette.
“Cruza, Sergeant!”
“Burton, Sergeant!”
In the army, last names were used instead of first names. But I was right Jamie Cruza was first to arrive second with Alice Burton.
The rest arrived only a minute early. I wondered which one was Aidan. Nobody was standing out among all the trainees except for Cruza and Burton.
I could not just single her out by asking so I waited for the clumsy one or the weak one.
“Clothes off!!! We are going to start our training right here before the sun rise!”
All of them hurried to remove their clothes leaving only boxers, sports bras and draws. Then they stood in line.
“70 sit ups, 120 seconds, lets go!”
They all got down and began their push ups. They were not all the way strong but they had been training hard I could tell. One body stood out to me. The bit mascular girl.
She was strong but she was slow.
Or intentionally slow.
I watched her through the next 3 hours if training and she was doing things on purpose. Slower, pretending to struggle. She was strong in shape but she kept being slow.
“Keep your legs straight and chest forward!” I stood in front of her as she did push-ups.
“Yes Sergeant!” The girl obeyed.
“State your name soldier”
“Aidan Black!, Sergeant”
I knew it. This was her.
Aidan Black.
The lowest trainee in the Chart.
