You can never know you are right unless you prove yourself right.
I had lived with that rule for long. I knew that realizing something, seeing something or hearing something did not make it true. What made it true was finding a way to prove it. To show myself I was right.
My family knew I never believed them unless they had evidence. They always thought I would become a detective but that was never my dream. The system was too fucked up and I was too observant.
If I became a detective. I was bound to figure out some dark stuff that would get me killed.I chose not to be that.
But it did not change how observant I was.
The first week as a trainer, I watched each and every one of them. They were surely hating on me but we had things to do. The week focused on light support weapons training and assessments.
I made sure to wake them up at 3am every morning for their physical training. During the day we got done with their program. I noticed every one else socialized except her.
Aidan.
She was quiet and very unfriendly. Infant Aidan had a bit if an anger problem.
Her strong physique surely intimidated a lot of people. She was tall with a muscular built body. There was no way Aidan was lowest on training if she was not doing it on purpose.
“You have the rest of your Sunday to rest. Tomorrow we start with the First Aid training. You are dismissed!”
“Yes Sergeant!” They saluted then marched away.
I was going to be seeing some of the Trainers on camp. There were already three groups. All trainees were to compete against each other but for now they were still In training. Today in army history I noticed the way Aidan kept zoning out.
I wanted to study her. Know her before I talked to her. Aidan was not weak, she was trying to appear so.
I took time making myself a meal in the military house I was staying in then afterwards I joined the rest at the military main house. I noticed a few familiar faces but most of them were just strangers. 6 trainers in the main house. They were watching football while drinking.
“Sergeant Chase! It’s good to have you join us” Private Percy handed me a beer and I took it sitting next to him.
“Nice to see you old guy.”
“So, any trouble first week?” He asked still concentrating on the screen.
“No, a few complaints and twisted bones here and there. Then the silent hate from the trainees.” I chuckled opening the bottle with my teeth.
“Well if there is no hate, you are doing a horrible job” Percy joked.
“The eyes they give me, I have died a lot of horrible deaths in their imaginations.”
“Remember when Drew suggested we murder our trainer?. Even though he said jokes, everyone knew he wanted to do it after the Sergeant embarrassed him during barracks inspection”
We both laughed at that memory. Drew was my friend who died in war. He was the most mischievous trainee during training. The Training Sergeant Donald and Drew had a strong hate relationship.
Losing Drew took a huge toll on me especially when I was well aware I was never going back in the field. I lost him and my career in the same battle.
“I heard these trainees are in demand more on guard duty. After AIT, they might go right to protection unit”
“Why so soon?” I frowned looking at Percy.
“Don’t know. But you know how these things go”
I did. The power dynamics were just too horrible for my liking. Even when I had a position. I had to fight for my team when it came to some of the bad decisions made higher up. Like having these kids protecting these political parties.
Now I had no voice. After the trainees graduated, they were out of my hands. This meant I had to train them harder to prepare them.
The next day we were back to training.
First Aid training I paired them in twos so they could help each other out.
“Black you are with Cruza”
“Her?. She is the lowest on charts!” Jamie complained.
“Which charts?” I looked at her in the eye.
“The performance charts on the board!” She spoke with confidence. Obviously being best was growing her ego.
“Who set that chart?”
“Sergeant Biltmore”
“And where is Sergeant Biltmore?”
…
“Exactly. He is not here. You will get your chart updated on week 8!. I am monitoring each one of you and just because you were once best, it does not mean you will stay that way!. I’m looking at character, strength, your ability to concentrate, how good you work with others!.” I stepped around them looking at their posture.
“And when you are out there serving our country, there will be no chart!. So I will not repeat myself Cruza!” I stared down at Jaimie.
“Yes Sergeant!” She moved to her partner Aidan. Her face neutral but her eyes told me she hated Jamie too.
I started training early afternoon until 5 in the evening then I dismissed them. I took a walk around the woods just letting ideas flow on what I had to do to talk to Aidan.
I climbed in a tree then sat on top of the brunch. It was comforting for me with nature. I was made for the woods.
Then I heard scrunches of twigs and footsteps. Aidan passed right under me running further into the woods. I stood up and climped higher up the brunches until I was on top then watched her run faster.
I pressed my timer watching her dissappear deeper into the trees until she appeared again at the lake. I looked down my timer to see 8 minutes. If I was putting a guess adding the distance she ran from the barracks I would say she took 13 minutes to make it to the lake.
Aidan had just proved my point. She was purposely self sabotaging. I got down the tree then waited on my previous spot. She took some time at the lake so I decided to go check out what she was doing.
I didn’t see her.
Which confused me until I saw the movement in the water. Aidan was hiding under water.
“If I stand here for an hour, you will drown private Black!” I called out looking in the lake.
Fucking hell.
There was silence.
“Alright then. I will just sit here for a while”
I sat down away from the water waiting for her ass to come out. After 3 minutes she emerged from under water with her uniform still on. She must have hidden from me.
“Sergeant Chase” Aidan greeted water running down her body.
“Come sit by me Private Black”
She removed her boots then sat down next to me waiting. I decided it was time to talk about her self sabotaging plan.
“When I was in training, I had a friend. He had a very bad habit of getting himself in trouble. Throughout training he kept getting punished laps, leg stands and push-ups. He never stopped. We were three, our other friend got in trouble and was dismissed but Him? Never.”
Aidan sat there listening in silence.
“We graduated and went to war together. I then asked him why he kept getting himself in trouble, he told me he didn’t want to be a soldier. His father had made him join the army.” I finished my story waiting for her to let it sink in.
“Ohw, uh why are you telling me this Sergeant?” Aidan questioned softly.
Wow all that bitchiness was gone. She looked nervous near me.
“I have been watching you and I noticed you intentionally hold back. You are not weak or not good at the training. You just make yourself appear so and I want to understand why” I looked at her through my glare which made her squirm avoiding eye contact.
Aidan was beautiful to say the least. She had her black hair set in locs. Very dull green eyes that looked as if she lost all purpose in life. Her tanned skin made her appear darker.
“I am sorry Sergeant I don’t understand what you are talking about” She looked away from me.
“You don’t have to lie, I watched you run from the barracks to the lake in 13 minutes and you just stayed under water for over 3 minutes sooo…”
Aidan sighed staring down at her hands.
“Being best comes with drama and expectations. I just want to finish my training in peace” She rubbed over her fingers as she softly spoke with her slightly raspy voice.
“OH so it’s not that you want to be dismissed?”
“No, not at all ma’am. I want to serve my country and protect a lot of families.” Her tone became stronger and more certain.
“Then work a little harder. Show me your potential. I will get to decide who is best and who can lead the soldiers to victory. Don’t do my job for me”
“Well I know I will do better than everyone else” She blurted out then smacked her lips shut.
“Is that so?.” I asked.
Aidan stayed quiet.
“Holding back only tells me you believe in yourself that you could take that best spot if you wanted. But your physique is not what will make me choose you best. So show me the soldier you want to be so I can correct and make you stronger than what you imagine for yourself. Do you understand?”
I held her shoulder which made her look in my direction then at my hand on her shoulder.
“Y..yes Sergeant”
I didn’t understand why she stammered. I ignored it then stood up.
“Meet me at the camp in 10” I smirked walking towards the woods.
She ran past me after a minute her boots back on her feet. I laughed giving her a minute before I took off. These kids didn’t know a shortcut to the barracks. These woods were my home once. I knew them like the back of my hand.
I got there in 9 minutes and she arrived in 11 minutes. Aidan looked at me with this look I could not understand.
“I guess you do need to train harder soldier” I smirked walking away. Not before I saw the look of realization on her face.
She must have realized I used the shortcut.
“Wait, I want a rematch Sergeant!” Aidan called out but I didn’t turn back.
Hmm I knew she was going to be putting in more work from now on.
