“Have you finished all your homework?” The deep, gentle voice on the other side of the line asked you.

“I still have a few questions left. You’re done?”

You had been talking to Gunwook on the phone for the past two hours while doing homework. You, Gunwook, along with 11 others, had all lived in the same neighbourhood since you were young and basically grew up together. But recently, it felt like your friendship with Gunwook was developing into something more – you had been catching feelings for your longtime friend, and that seemed to be mutual.

“Does meeting a same-age friend excite you that much?” You tried to bring up what was on your mind in the most casual manner.

“What? Me? Ahh you mean Yeri Noona’s sister?” He let out a chuckle. “Seok Y/N, are you jealous?”

“Why would I be?”

“Isn’t it nice to meet someone of the same age? I’m the only one born in 2005 in our group.”

“You treat yourself like a 04-liner anyway.” Since Gunwook was born in January, he was in the same grade as those born in 2004. “It’s not like you call me Noona.”

“Do you want me to call you Noona? Y/N Noona?”

“Ya, are you crazy?”

“Ooh I think I like it. Y/N Noona.”

“I don’t, so shut up.”

“I prefer noonas over same-age friends, though.”

Thump. Thump. Thump. Your heart was beating so loudly that you were scared that Gunwook might hear it over the phone.

Just then, the sudden knock on your door made you almost jump out of your seat.

“Y/N, come down for fruits.” Your brother, Matthew, popped his head round the door. “Why do you look so frightened?”

“You… startled me.” You stuttered nervously.

“You’re on the phone again? Why are you always on the phone lately?”

“What nonsense are you talking about?” You almost shouted.

“Is it a boy? Are you seeing someone?”

“It’s Yoonji! Yoonji!” You apologised to Yoonji in your mind for using her as an excuse. “Who would want to date me when they all know I have an overprotective brother? You scare them away before they can even approach me!”

“That’s good to know.”

“What’s good about that? Do you want your sister to remain single for the rest of her life?” You started throwing cushions at the door. As soon as Matthew sensed danger, he swiftly escaped the scene.

Meanwhile, the boy on the other end of the call started giggling non-stop.

“You found that funny?”

“No, I just found you cute.”

“…That’s it. I’m hanging up. I’m going to head down to the living room for fruits.”

“Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow at school then.” The laughter in his voice remained evident.

“Mhm, see you tomorrow.”

You spent a moment catching your breath. Your heart was pounding like you’d just finished a high intensity workout.

.

Living close to your friends made it much easier for all of you to meet up frequently. Of course, it was a bit special this time, given that Jiwoong would be introducing two new additions to the group.

Everyone was now at Hanbin’s home, except for the main characters of the day. You took the seat next to Yoonji while your eyes intuitively traveled to where Gunwook was, and you realised he was also stealing glances at you. In the most natural way possible, you covered the raised corners of your lips with your hand. He nearly laughed out loud, seeming to have noticed you concealing your grin, but he managed to disguise it with a cough.

“Yoonji, what is that you have to talk about with Y/N? You two have been on the phone all the time lately. I even heard the two of you talking till after midnight last night.” Matthew asked out of curiosity.

“What? I…”

You gave Yoonji a secret nudge to stop her from going on. She looked at you and received the signal you were trying to send.

“Yeah, that’s right. We’ve been calling each other a lot. Um… you know, girls have a lot to talk about, like school, gossip, boys…”

You gave her another nudge.

“No, not boys. We don’t talk about boys.” Not knowing what else to add to her lousy explanation, Yoonji looked at you again, asking for help.

“Oppa, stop being nosy and stop trying to eavesdrop on my calls.” You immediately intervened and brought the attention back to your brother.

“I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. You were speaking really loudly.”

The doorbell rang at the perfect timing, putting your argument with your brother to an end. You exchanged a relieved look with Gunwook.

“That must be Jiwoong Hyung.” Hanbin went to get the door.

Outside the door stood Jiwoong, with Yeri standing next to him. And behind them was a girl you assumed to be Yeri’s sister.

“Annyeong.” Jiwoong waved at us with his hand that was entwined with Yeri’s.

“I’ve never felt so single in my life.” Gyuvin groaned at the sight of the couple.

“Let me introduce. This is Choi Yeri, my… ehem girlfriend.”

Everyone had this teasing yet pleased smile on their faces. You were finding this scene extremely fascinating because you had never seen Jiwoong so shy. All of you had heard a lot about Yeri given that Jiwoong couldn’t stop talking about her. She was exactly like you’d imagined – a graceful and classy lady.

“And this is Seri, Yeri’s younger sister.” Jiwoong gestured towards the other girl, who was wearing a bright, cute smile on her face.

“Annyeonghaseyo, I’m Choi Seri. Very nice to meet you all.”

We went around the room and introduced ourselves, one by one.

“Annyeong, I’m Park Gunwook, born in 2005.”

“You’re a 05-liner too?” The girl exclaimed with excitement. “Does that mean you’re in Year 11 too?”

“I’m born in early 2005, so I’m in Year 12.”

“Ah then should I call you oppa?”

“No… that’s not what I meant. Just talk casually with me.” Seri’s joke got Gunwook slightly flustered.

“Hahahahah our Gunwookie is getting shy.” Hanbin teased while squishing the younger’s pink cheeks.

“Are we going to get another couple in the group soon?” Gyuvin smirked playfully.

“Ya Kim Gyuvin, shut up.” Gunwook warned.

“Next in line are Hao Oppa and Narae Unnie. Don’t try and cut the queue.” Yoonji joined in the teasing.

“Ya Jeong Yoonji!” This time, Narae got annoyed.

“Sorry, these people would never stop bickering with each other.” Jiwoong apologised to Yeri and Seri for this embarrassing first impression. To this, the sisters both chuckled.

Yeri and Seri eventually became regulars at your subsequent gatherings, especially Seri; she felt so comfortable with the group to the point where she would join you guys even when Jiwoong and Yeri couldn’t make it.

However, you couldn’t bring yourself to develop a close relationship with Seri. You could tell she was a kind girl, and you had nothing against her, but you also had to admit that her presence bothered you to some extent.

Like right now, you looked like you were chatting with Gyuvin and Yujin, but in fact, your full attention was on Seri and Gunwook, who were leaning against each other, watching reels on Tiktok.

Seri’s existence made you increasingly possessive of Gunwook, though strictly speaking, you were merely a friend to him. Who were you to get jealous?

You needed some distraction to free you from your frustrating emotions, so you went into the kitchen to get a drink. What you didn’t expect was Gunwook stepping into the kitchen right after you. You got your drink from the fridge and tried to leave without acknowledging his presence, but he stood in your way with crossed arms and stared into your soul.

“What are you doing?” You looked right back at him.

“You’re ignoring me.” He made a statement, not a question.

“I thought this was how we’re supposed to act in front of people.”

“There’s no one here, though. Even if there are people around, we don’t have to act like we hate each other. We’re friends after all.”

“Then tell me, what am I supposed to do as a friend?”

“You’re being weird today, Y/N.”

“That’s right. I am being weird.” You murmured to yourself while walking out of the kitchen.

Jealousy’s such a nasty emotion, and you absolutely hated it when it took over you.

Ok, so you are

Can you at least tell me what I have done wrong?

.

You could leave him on read in text, but you couldn’t get away from him in school.

“Y/N, let’s talk.” He stopped you in the middle of the corridor.

“I have nothing to say to you.”

“You didn’t answer my question last night.”

“You didn’t do anything wrong. There was nothing I could have said.”

“Y/N, I don’t like your attitude now. Can’t we just talk about this openly?”

“You were the one who asked to talk. Don’t criticise me for my attitude.”

“Do you really have to act out like this?”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I’ve always been this unreasonable. Stay away from me if you can’t take it.” With that, you stormed away.

From then on, you went into a cold war with Gunwook. You managed to keep it from your friends, since you two never really interacted much in front of them anyway. That saved you a lot of excuses and explanations; how convenient!

.

Currently, everyone was gathered at your house for a barbecue party. It has been more than a week since you and Gunwook have ignored each other. He seemed to have adapted to that without any problem, seeing how happy and giggly he was, especially around Seri.

“Hehe Gunwook-ah, you got sauce on your face.” Seri pointed at Gunwook’s left cheek.

“Really? Where?” He tried to wipe it off but couldn’t get the right spot.

“Wait, I’ll help you.” Seri then carefully wiped off the sauce on Gunwook’s face and proceeded to lick it off her finger.

You witnessed the whole incident. That was it. That was the last straw for you. If he didn’t see the need to keep a boundary between him and other girls, why should you?

You scanned around your house and saw Gyuvin sitting in one of the garden chairs with Ricky. You went over with some freshly cooked food on your plate and sat down on Gyuvin’s lap.

“Yaaaa, what are you doing? There’s literally a chair right next to you.”

“I want to sit here.”

“Argh whatever.”

Gyuvin wasn’t really bothered about the physical contact since he was a pretty touchy person himself, and in his mind, he never treated you like a girl.

“Your galbi looks so good.” He stared at the piece of meat on your plate.

Without second thought, you speared the food with your fork and fed it to Gyuvin.

“Seok Y/N, why are you being so nice today?”

“Shut up, or I’ll steal all your food.”

“That sounds more like you.”

After dinner, you all huddled in the living room for a movie. You went over to Gyuvin again and sat next to him.

“You’re being so clingy today.”

“You have a problem with that?” You proceeded to move even closer to him and lay your head on his shoulder.

You were well aware that Gunwook was staring at the two of you, but you brushed it off. The movie went on, and almost half of the group were falling asleep, including the boy next to you. Gyuvin attempted to find himself a more comfortable position by snuggling up to you, and you let him.

Gunwook, who was sitting in the other corner of the room, could no longer stand it. He got up from his seat and stomped across the room. He pulled you out of your seat in an aggressive manner, not giving a damn about Gyuvin, who was crashing into the sofa, or anyone who was still awake.

“What do you think you’re doing?” You grumbled furiously as he led you into your bedroom and closed the door behind you.

“What do YOU think you’re doing?”

“What did I even do?”

“What was that with Gyuvin?”

“What was what with Gyuvin?”

“Seok Y/N, stop playing dumb.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Let me get out.”

“No one’s getting out of here until we talk things through.” He placed his hands against the door, trapping you in between.

“What’s your problem?”

“I actually do have a lot of problems. First, you acted distant. Then you got angry and stopped talking to me. Now, you’re being extra touchy with Gyuvin.”

“As if you care.”

“What makes you think that I don’t? Not talking to you for a week has driven me crazy, and seeing you being close with Gyuvin almost made me die of jealousy.” He whined like a wronged child.

Not expecting him to be so honest and sincere about his feelings, you stared at his chest, not knowing how to respond. But his openness definitely softened your attitude.

“Y/N, please, please talk to me.”

“It’s just that… I’ve had enough.” Your eyes looked everywhere but his face. “I’ve had enough of having to watch you being all friendly and smiley with another girl in front of others, yet I had to act like there’s nothing going on between us. I’ve had enough of being overwhelmed with jealousy, yet I couldn’t say a word because I was in no position to do so. I’ve had enough of…”

That was all Gunwook had to hear. He lifted your chin with his hand and landed his lips on yours. It didn’t take long for you to kiss him back.

“Do you still think you’re unqualified to say you’re jealous?” He whispered against your lips. “I like you, Y/N-ah. No matter how unreasonable you are, I like you, just the way you are.”

“Ya!” You hit his chest playfully.

“So what do you say? Be my girlfriend, Seok Y/N?”

“Who asks a girl to be their girlfriend after they kissed them? Shouldn’t it be the other way round?”

“It’s really not that hard to just say yes.”

“Mhm.” You muttered a ‘yes’ under your breath.

“What was that? I couldn’t hear you clearly.”

“Forget it if you didn’t hear…”

He connected his lips with yours again after recognising words weren’t your way to show affection. He, too, preferred kisses anyway.

“So you were jealous of Seri all this time?”

“You were so excited to meet a same-age friend from the very beginning; how could I not be? And she’s been glued to you ever since.”

“Next time when you’re jealous, feel free to go up and tell her ‘Hands off. He’s mine.'”

“You’re crazy.”

“I like it when you’re possessive.”

“Are we going to tell the others?”

“You bet because I’m so not going to hide us away from anyone anymore. Speaking of which, how do you think Matthew Hyung would react?”

“Yeah, about that, you should probably walk out of this room ready to be punched in the face for stealing his pretty little sister from him.”

“Ugh, why do you have such a protective brother?”

“I guess possessiveness runs in the family?”
