Matthew x Y/N
Fluff
.
You sigh after finishing yet another paragraph of your report. You’ve been coming to the neighbourhood cafe every day for the last week, just to get all your assignments done. The number of deadlines approaching just seems endless. You wonder just when you will finally finish all your work.
You take out your phone and open the Instagram app. The first post that popped up is a photo of your high school classmate with her boyfriend, captioned ‘My Valentine⤒. You then tap on one of the circles at the top of your screen.
‘Happy Valentine’s Day, my love.’
‘With my favourite person.’
‘Everyday is Valentine’s Day when I’m with you.’
Friends, relatives, acquaintances, celebrities – literally everyone has a Valentine.
“Is it really necessary for the whole world to remind me how single I am?” You mutter under your breath. You look up from your phone screen and stare at your unfinished report on your computer screen, letting out yet another sigh unknowingly.
Looking around you, you realise you’re surrounded by lovey-dovey lovebirds in the cafe. You swear, as a frequent customer of the cafe, you’ve never seen so many couples here at the same time.
Loneliness, which you seldom feel, slowly creeps up. Almost all of your friends have started dating in the course of the last few years, but you have never been in a relationship. You’re not really desperate for a relationship, especially after hearing all those bad anecdotes of your friends’ own experiences; you know relationships aren’t always sunshine and rainbows. And honestly, being alone isn’t bad at all. You’ve been prioritising self-growth and genuinely find peace in being alone. But sometimes, you can’t help but wonder if there is really someone out there who would unreservedly love you for who you are; you wonder if a day would come when you find someone who loves you as much as you love them.
You push aside your emotions and focus on your report again. While working, your hand naturally reaches out to pick up your cup of coffee for a quick caffeine boost, only to realise you have drunk all of it. You can’t be bothered to buy another cup of coffee, so you just carry on with work.
Just as you’re sighing for the 528th time of the day, a sweet voice interrupts you from behind.
“Sorry to disturb you.”
You turn around to see a light-haired boy standing next to you with a small tray in his hands. You recognise him as one of the employees at the cafe. You can’t take your eyes off his gleaming smile, which brightened up the whole space.
“A hot latte on the house.” The boy places the tray on your table.
You look at him in confusion. “On the house?”
“Happy Valentine’s Day.” With that, he goes back to the counter, leaving you dumbstruck.
What on earth just happened?
You scan around the cafe to check if other customers have received a free drink, but that does not seem to be the case.
Your eyes land on the cup of coffee with a heart-shaped latte art. Next to the cup, there’s an individually wrapped chocolate with a note that says:
I hope you’re not too stressed about work. Have a sweet Valentine’s Day.
Matthew
Has he been paying attention to you all this time?
Your hand moves to feel your heart. Does it usually beat this quickly?
You look towards the counter, where the boy is, and he’s looking at you too. You sense a hint of shyness in his smile, but it does not mask the radiance of it in the slightest.
You try to resume working, but somehow your attention keeps going back to the boy. Annoyance slowly builds up; you don’t like this equivocal feeling that the short note has evoked. You know you won’t be able to concentrate on your work until all the questions in your head have been answered. And the only way to get your answers is by asking the one who has written the note.
You pack your bag and take them with you so that you can run away immediately afterwards in case you make a complete fool of yourself. You gather your courage and walk towards the boy, who seems to be expecting you.
“How can I help?” He has no intention to hide his delight at all.
“What does this mean?” You hold up the note in your hand.
“It means that…” He bites his lips before continuing. “I want to ask you out on a date.”
You try to keep a straight expression, but internally, you’re squealing.
“Would you like to go out with me?” He asked tentatively.
You extend your hand with your palms facing up. He looks at you puzzled.
“Give me your phone. You’ll need my phone number to contact me, won’t you?”
Without delay, he rummages in his pocket for his phone and unlocks it before handing it to you. You can’t help but smile at his nervousness.
“Y/N.” He reads out the name you have entered in his contacts. “I will get in touch with you soon.”
“I’ll be waiting, Matthew.” You feel blood rushing up to your cheeks. You can’t seem to get used to this fluttery feeling, but you’re not hating it at all.
“Would you be coming tomorrow as well?” He stops you before you turn around to leave.
“I think I’ll keep coming. Everything’s lovely here – the coffee, the vibe, and especially the people.”
“See you tomorrow, then.” The implied meaning of your comment makes him walk on air.
“See you.” A part of you secretly hopes that you’ll be spending your upcoming February 14s with the boy you’re looking at right now.
Your Valentine’s Day this year doesn’t feel that lonely after all. Maybe love really does come to you when you’re least expecting it.
